DJS-1000 - Using Master Tempo with Samples <91 BPM, Playback is 50%

I'm using a DJS-1000 with Hip Hop samples that are less than 91 BPM.  When I put these particular samples and loops into Master Tempo playback mode, they playback at 50% speed, regardless of where the Tempo Fader or Scene BPM is.  The other two playback modes work normally.  Am I missing a setting somewhere?  Is this a glitch or does the software not work well with files with tempos that low?

The workarounds are simple, either don't use Master Tempo....or make the overall BPM for that Scene with these samples 2x.  So my Scene with the 90 BPM samples is set to an overall BPM of 180.  (I just have to remember now that the second beat is at 9 on the sequencer and not 5, like in all my other scenes.)  Not a big deal, it just seems kind of weird that the cutoff is so high at 91 BPM - I get 75 or 80 BPM.  This is a little annoying considering the role samplers have traditionally played in Hip Hop.  If I was given a settings choice, like in Rekordbox, I'd select a BPM Range like 68 - 135.

Depending on where you get your samples from, I've found that some sample packs will contain non-one shot samples (loops or phrases) which for whatever reason encode BPM as half or double what it 'should' be - causing the DJS to use the wrong BPM for TIME STRETCHING samples. in your case, go to the SAMPLE/EDIT area and then click on EDIT and my guess is your 90 BPM sample is actually encoded as 180bpm?

Yes, you're right about that, they all say 2x their understood or initial BPM.  So I can re-edit and save them to keep the scene at the intended tempo.

But, something is 2x-ing the tempo of certain loops.  One of the tempo-doubled  files from Splice is literally named "Drums_Loops_VintageDrums_04_85" with the 85 being the tempo.  I'm using the Project Creator on a Mac, pulling in samples from Splice and some of my own.  They play and look normal until I select Master Tempo playback.  Another project, from a while ago has a loop I grabbed on my own (maybe using Rekordbox) of Ginuwine's "Pony" (don't judge).  That sample on the DJS currently says 142.  I see some websites claim it's 142 but I have always kept, sort, played and recorded that at 71.  For me, it's all samples slower than 91 get doubled but only at that Sample Edit level and only once I use Master Tempo.

I feel like the DJS has a tempo range like Rekordbox or any other DJ software but it's like 90-165 and everything outside that gets adjusted.  I can't find anything to support this.  I'll experiment and see if i can identify if it does have a preferred range.

It's good to know there's a workaround.

i'll do some deeper and systematic experimenting as well and report back here.

it's funny but I've noticed almost the same type of behavior with what feels like a random selection of samples i use, though with BPMs on the opposite end of the spectrum (ie. 180bpm or higher). and yet....i seem to have an inexplicable number of 'Pony' remixes or acapellas or songs that sample it. i guess it turns out Ginuwine's Pony is weirdly one of those rare, sometimes great, unifying songs, or something.

on a related/unrelated note: apparently just two weeks ago Ginuwine almost drowned in a Criss Angel magic stunt for a reality tv thing but his doctors say he's going to be fine.

So as you F-around and Find Out, I've seen that when I get into the sample edit screen, you can edit the BPM and the Bars.  I've been 1/2-ing the Bars and that takes the BPM down as well.  Is this normal?  I'm not sure if this is a glitch with the DJS determining the BPM or the overall length - the Bars of the sample.  It is pretty consistent across samples at 90 BPM or less, as in no loops below 90 are accurate.  Again, the fix is easy, it's just an odd quirk.

And Ginuwine....WHAT????
