Dead (no current) USB Ports. Again. Second Opus-Quad.

I'm the original poster (hi!) and I also the guy who posted on FB about this issue,  I got so much shit on facebook,  people telling me i was talking rubbish and faking it (for what reason i have no idea)  but I think its definitely a design fault

I ordered mine day one and got my device 2 days later,  the next day i plugged in an old USB drive and it did indeed blow a resistor,  I spoke to BOPDJ and they said to log an issue with Pioneer and  to be fair to pioneer as soon as I logged the issue they gave me a list of local repair shops,  I booked it in and got it repaired in about 3 days

I actually drove the two hours to pick it back up and I spoke to the engineer who fixed it,  he said he had had another booked in while mine was there with the same issue, but this chap had plugged a mobile phone into it

He said he thought it was a design fault as it only had a 1amp (this might be wrong, it might be milliamps (i'm a DJ not an electronics engineer :) but he said whatever it was he thought the resistor was too small .. and that I should be careful what I plug in .. he said he did inform pioneer of the fault (which is the process I believe)

Since then I tend not to plug anything in except my scandisk ssd .. (i dont play out, its just for home/studio use) and most of the time i just use rekordbox in export mode and connect wirelessly to it

Sorry to hear you guys are also having problems I hope Pioneer get their act together  and announce they will fix them all, its certainly a problem,  i should be able to plug whatever i like into it (within reason)

Up to this point I've only used the USB 3 port in the back.  My library is on an SSD and it's been cleaner to keep that plugged into the back of the unit.  I didn't notice that the USB1 port wasn't functioning until I tried the firmware update.  I'd initially thought that I had bad thumb drives (and even purchased a couple of brand new ones to test).  I'm not sure if this port was always faulty or went out when trying to update the firmware.

i have the same problem with my RX3. It has two ports and both suddenly don´t read my sticks any more. All sticks worked before without any problem.

error E-8307: DEVICE NO RESPONCE pops up.

Also i could use one port to power my iPhone - this also is not working any more.

i have the opus quad and the same thing is now happening for me. I was mixing and recording earlier today with zero issues using multiple usb slots. I am now trying to use it again and all of a sudden, my usb 1 and 3 slots aren't reading any of my drives, but usb 2 is reading and running all of them.

My OQ is stop working in USB port 1 & 2.

Only working in USB port 3.

Pioneer DJ, please have announcement about the problems of USB and the solution !

Same here. Port 3 died. No power.

Same issue here.  Port 1 died and I believe that this is the only port that can be used for the firmware update.

Leon and Terrence, what drive did you use that killed the port, would be cool to get a list together of drives killing these resistors

gotcha, what SSD are you using? how many tracks roughly that the drive has to work through?

It's a Western Digital MyPassport 512GB SSD...2906 songs using a little over 219GB of storage.  I tried to use a 32GB Sandisk thumbdrive for the firmware update.  The WD has been working good up to this point and functions as expected on USB 2 and USB 3

I have a Samsung T7 1TB thats been good and a Sandisk ultra luxe 1TB that i did about 9 jobs with with no issues mainly using port 3

I have Sandisk Extreme Pro USB sticks 256 GB (half full) and a Sandisk Extreme Pro V2 1TB SSD (2/3 full). I am not sure which device caused it. I swapped my USB's a lot, especially after reading about the issues, just to do a little bit of testing and see if I got myself a decent unit. I have to use this device for professional gigs, so within reason I have to be able to plug in any device.

The SSD works perfectly in my XDJ-RX2.

The thing is that the USB sockets on my CDJ-2000 NXS players have taken everything for the last 10 years, Phones, tablets, the cheapest and most expensive USB sticks (also the Sandisk mini's that became very hot), HDD's, USB lights.... No issues at all! The CDJ's even came with iPhone connection leads in the box, so they are supposed to have all kinds of things plugged in.

The ports should be (shortcut) protected on a professional device like this. Especially on the back of the unit. In the dark it's very easy to plug in the wrong thing (like a USB-C connector; that socket is next to it, not very well-thought).

The manual says:
• If excessive current passes through the USB port on the unit, the unit stops the power supply to the USB device and stops communication. To restore the unit to a normal condition, disconnect the USB device from the unit. Do not use the USB device with the unit again.
If you still can’t restore the unit to a normal condition (i.e. if the unit doesn’t communicate with a connected USB device), turn the unit off and on.

So it is protected, but  the above does not work very well.

I wish Pioneer would shed some light on this and say if this is fixed in later builds, I just received an Opus (May build) and this is worrying me that at any point the USB ports may just fail. How is there no info or response on this??!

i have also noticed on some drives with a lot of files on it that if I eject the drive properly, take it out and plug it back in it does not work and the Opus is not ejecting the drive properly. I have to plug it into the laptop, let it mount the drive and then it all works fine again. This has been reported to Pioneer but wanted to let you guys know in case you see the same 

@BriChi. Mine was from May too.
About unproper ejected drives: It can give problems later. I accidentally unplugged my SSD from my RX2 when the LED was still blinking. It seemed to be no problem at first, but later whan I was playing on an XZ in a venue, It suddenly gave me a 'database is corrupted' message on top of the browsing screen after half an hour. Never saw that message before.... Luckily I carry backups in many forms.
I advise you to give the drive a good test before using it for a gig.

i use the drives all the time, they are great and i never pull them without ejecting, just an issue the Opus has where it says it is ejected but it did not eject it properly. it happened on a drive with 14K track and 75K tracks (never had an issue on any previous decks with same drives and files)

Anyone of u have had contact with Pioneer? What did they say? Or they only send u the repair contact?

I wish something would come out like what to avoid, causes and so on so we know what to stay away from.

same problem on an opus may 23, all usb dead after connecting western digital elements not SSD but anyway USB 2 and 3 certified disks that work on every peripheral I opened a ticket in Pioneer Italy but apparently they don't know the problem, there I ask everyone to open a detailed assistance ticket, where you explain everything from a to z, it will probably be a batch assembled with defective components, but you need to get over it quickly and definitively

the fix is a replacement of a blown resistor according to people that have had this fixed already

I wish Pioneer would come out and say the issue and devices to avoid so so we know, right now i wont let anyone plug in a drive that is not the one i personally use that works, sad in a way being i have never had to do this in the past

I also read about the resistance and it is a very serious thing because USB is a non-Pioneer standard its assembly cannot be modified, this means that poor or wrong components have been used.

Quick update on the Opus Quad:

• Pioneer support instructed me to have my unit serviced by an authorized support center.  Unfortunately, the support center was ~ 5 hours away and I didn't want to pay for the shipping to have it delivered.  I was able to drive to the support location last week to drop the unit off for repair.
• Prior to taking the unit to support, I used my USB digital meter to test the voltage on each USB port (as expected, USB 1 reported 0 V/0 A) confirming that the port was faulty.  All other ports were functioning as expected
• The support center mentioned that it may take a few weeks for repair depending on availability of parts.  

I'll look to get an update out once the repair is complete
