DJM-5000 + Macbook Pro (Early 2011)

I just purchased and received a new DJM-5000. The first thing I tested was the connection to my laptop via USB. I have a new Mackbook Pro running 10.6.8. It's a 2011 model with a Sandy Bridge processor so it boots up with the 64-bit kernel and extensions. After installing the Pioneer driver for the DJM-5000 version 1.1.0 I couldn't get the mixer to show up under the sound system preferences nor could I find it in the Audio MIDI Setup utility.

After some searching around on the internet, I couldn't find any specific solutions however, I did find a post here about new drivers for the DJM-2000 and mention of 64-bit kernel support for the Mac OS. So I decided to try rebooting in 32-bit kernel mode. After the reboot I was able to see the mixer as a sound device on my Mac.

Please someone tell me there is a new driver for this mixer, like the DJM-2000, with 64-bit kernel support.

I just spoke with tech support and at first the rep said it would work in 64-bit mode but by the end of the call said it would not. I was told the driver is only 32-bit. This is very disappointing. I thought this issue had been resolved. It's not like 64-bit operating systems are a new thing. They have been around for years now. I see that there is a driver, version 1.200, for Windows that supports 64-bit but no updated driver for the Mac. The version history for the Mac driver says 1.1.0 is the same version that shipped with the mixer.

I asked tech support if Pioneer was going to write a 64-bit driver for the Mac and the rep said no. Later the rep told me I could keep checking back to see if there was a new driver.

My plan was to keep this mixer for at least 5 years. I don't want to have to reboot my computer into 32-bit mode at every gig for the next 5 years. I know I could hookup my laptop with analog connections but part of the point of buying this mixer was to simplify the connections and have an external multi-channel sound card built-in.

Next, Mac OS X 10.7 Lion was released today. I don't know if I will even be able to boot into 32-bit mode once I make the switch to Lion.

I would like to know if Pioneer has any plans to update the driver for the Mac OS to support 64-bit. I'm willing to move forward with this mixer if there is a plan to update the driver. If there's no plan to update the driver or if it's unknown if the driver will be updated, I'm going to have to return this mixer to the vendor. Is there someone here that can answer that question? Is there someone else at Pioneer I can call to find out.

@Todd > Currently the only way to use the DJM5000's drivers with OS X is to boot to 32bit mode, which you should still be able to do with Lion (although I haven't tested it or read otherwise to confirm).  The engineers know about this and should have a 64bit driver available at some point.

Thanks Pulse.

Are you confirming that Pioneer is going to develop a 64-bit Mac driver for the DJM-5000?

I have to ask because the I just got this mixer and I really want it to work with my laptop without having to boot the machine using the 32-bit kernel. I can live with it for a while if Pioneer is going to create an updated driver. However, if Pioneer has no plans to update the driver, I really should look for something else that might be a better fit.

I don't want to be waiting around for something that will never materialize. I have a sizable investment in my laptop and now in this mixer. I realize it would be impossible for Pioneer to design for every possible scenario that a person could put together. I however, need/want a solution that works seamlessly with my hardware. I hope you / Pioneer can understand that.

Thanks.

I've asked for an expected timeline on release but that's about all I have right now - no concrete info, sorry.

For others that may try to use the DJM-5000 with a Mac that boots using a 64-bit kernel. Here are some links to articles in Apple's knowledge base that you might find helpful.

Hello Todd, hello Pulse.

I've the same problems like Todd. I use a MacBook pro with Leopard 64 bit OS X 10.6.8 and the current Mac-driver doesn't work. When I start the Mac in 32-bit it works.

Pulse: Please post it here, when the engineers are ready with the 64-bit version.

(sry for my English, I'm from Germany)

Thanks a lot...

Any word on an updated 64-bit driver OS X for the DJM?

Seems like the DJM5000 has been forgotten. I feel that Pioneer is focusing on other new stuff like new CDJs, Controllers or other mixers but DJM5000.

I've got the same problem and need to use only DJM5000 because I like its performance and functions and I love MIDI Control so that's why I invested on it. I don't want to feel like a fooled after purchased it and other stuff have many updates and friendly with Apple stuff. Come on! the world is spinning and everyone is moving forward but why we feel like we have been left behind....or not prioritized.

If there's no any move from Pioneer, I'll go for Allen & Heath mixers instead.

It looks like 64-bit drivers are now available. I recently rebuilt my Macbook Pro with a clean install of 10.7 and just went to download the DJM-5000 drivers and found a new version that support 64-bit. I installed the driver but have not yet tested the DJM-5000. I'm sure it will work. I just wanted to update this thread for anyone who might have subscribed to let them know the new drivers are ready for download.
