[SOLVED] RMX-1000 - Custom sample banks won't play unless I unplug the USB cable

Hi everyone,

Proud new owner of the RMX1000 and I'm loving the X-PAD / roll features except for the following problem.

When I try to load samples into the 4 user configurable banks using remixbox, I can't seem to play them unless I completely unplug the RMX-1000 from the PC. This seems unncessarily restrictive especially since remixbox does such a good job of syncing the rest of the settings to the device in real time as I change them in the software.

In case I'm doing something wrong, here's what I'm doing:

Power up the RMX-1000 with the USB cable plugged in. Windows mounts the SD card as a removable drive. Open up remixbox (v1.0.1) and hit SYNC. Go into the samples part of the XPAD section and drag & drop some WAV samples into the banks. Then I click Export at the top, tick both "effect parameter" and "sampler data" and click OK. A dialog pops up saying "exporting completed".

Now if I hold the BANK button on the RMX-1000, the bank labels 1-4 all flash green, so I choose one that I had selected a sample for (e.g. bank 2). At this point I'd expect to be able to play the samples as as normal but instead, none of the 4 sample buttons are even dimly lit, and pressing one results in the button being dimly lit but no sound plays.

The only way I can get the custom sample banks to work is to completely unplug the USB cable from the back of the RMX-1000 which is very annoying as it means constantly plugging and unplugging the device?

Does anyone else have this problem or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks

Matt Wilson

you're doing everything correct. this is a known problem, they will have to fix this in an firmware update... until then.... sounds like you got the hang of it.

Thanks for replying so fast djkiloton, glad to hear I'm not alone with this - will just have to work around it and keep my eye out for new firmware then

It's not a "problem" but the RMX is unable to access the SD card when it's mounted as a drive to your computer.  You must disconnect the RMX from the USB in order for it to read the SD card.

Easy enough to work around for now I guess, just very inconvenient constantly unplugging the unit for the sake of playing a few samples. Kind of ruins the fun of being able to tweak the settings on the fly (e.g. quickly changing the roll tempos on the xpad whilst it's synced over USB, or changing the release fx to hold loops temporarily etc).

I guess it makes sense from a technical point of view that the RMX can't read the card whilst its mounted on the computer, but at the very least it'd be great if remixbox had a button to enable/disable the PC's lock on the card so that you could leave it plugged in the whole time and not be constantly leaning around unplugging things :)

At the very least it would've been nice of Pioneer to document the behaviour in the manual instead of letting vast swathes of users get very frustrated. :-(

I thought I had read in the manual that you need to disconnect the USB... <goes to find user manual> ...

In the USER mode it doesn't say anything about the USB.  It doesn't explicitly say to disconnect the USB cable (and I'm sure this will find its way to a revised version of the manual), but it does need to be disconnected.

Fingers crossed Pioneer's clever engineers will work some magic and update the firmware so that you don't need to disconnect it, then they won't need to bother updating the manual! :)

It won't happen for the same reason you can't share a single hard drive connected two computers via USB connection (you can do it with networking).

lol how long till we get users complaining of the usb port being broken,

Its not unheard of.

i don't mean to be negative but it does seem a bit daft and does put unnecessary strain on the components.

So unplug it from the other end.  Cables aren't single-sided unless they're fixed (which this is not).  ;)

Pionix has a valid point, it doesn't make any sense to stress the ports constantly plugging & unplug a cable in the case where its not being moved around and it's just inconvenient. Suggesting unplugging it from the other end has an air of Steve Jobs about it ;) Maybe it would work if I held it correctly!

And don't get me wrong, I'm not just being negative either, I love the RMX-1000 and all my other Pioneer gear. Money well spent for sure.

Doesn't seem like something that should be impossible at first glance though. Each bank has a well documented 16 seconds of sample memory, which implies to me that there is a buffer capable of holding 16 seconds of audio for this purpose, so maybe that could be filled over USB from remixbox. Or in the simplest case, just a button in the software which completely disables the USB port (equivalent to unplugging the cable but without any awquard leaning and untidy cables).

I can but dream :)

For anyone who's paid attention, once you load the banks, they're all loaded and ready to launch - there's no more loading time required.

Flash drives get connected and disconnected over and over and they still work just fine... there's nothing to say the connection on the RMX would be any different.

For me this isn't practical, i dont want to have to crawl around under my desk each time , i will wait for a fix ;)

hey pulse this makes sense now about the mounting.. but yeah if it could be released or sadly like lol i've sad before about the memory but with a device like this i kinda see how some variables could be overlooked. and this "mounting of the sd card problem" but i thank pioneer and RIK and the rest of the R&D who released this device without it you wouldn't have all this in this package and with an awesome quant alg on eevery effect! so i'll deal with the annoyances cause this device is still awesome..lol i call the xpad a glitch pad still .. but yeah i'm rambling time to go mix lol

I had the same issue, but I figured out a very simple thing I was not doing, everytime you select export , you must select also in the little box that pop out, synchro your samples, otherwise the samples will not load.

Hi Guys

I just been trying to load my user samples into the bank, which was successful.

But I want to be able to play them via the VST of the RMX in ableton, but because I need the RMX plugged in via usb I can't access my user samples due to the shared SD card issue.

Has anyone else experienced this or have a work around?

Actually I've worked out what I need to do, just used the load feature in the VST and its loaded my samples, with still keeping the USB cable plugged in :-)
