OK, Im hoping im not going to get slaughtered for this but here goes.
I have just bought two cdj-1000's and have all my music on my external hard drive. I used to DJ out alot a few years back when the scene was still 1210's but have lost touch. I managed to track down lots of tunes but have always just burnt them onto cd's and away we go but im fed up of this now and would just like to play them straight of my computer.
I have read so many pros and cons about various ways of doing it that I thought I would just ask. I just want the simpilist way to set this up and what I will need.
Anyones opinion would be a major help.

@Dan > The way I see it you have 3 options;
1) Upgrade your gear - possibly the most expensive option but you get all the new technology that can access USB storage and facilitate in categorising and tagging your files.
2) Buy a DVS system - timecoded discs for use with your CDJs that will allow you to play tracks on your laptop just like normal CDs. A somewhat expensive method (and possibly outdated).
3) Keep burning discs.

Yep the above is True and these are the only methods..
Traktor (Scratch) timecode(Including traktor A10)
Serato Timecode (Including SL box)
So yeah... and One CDJ-350 costs about [EDIT] euro's BUT timecode may have difficulties with browsing , setting loops and using the players functions as intended These days we have USB/MIDI/HID which allows our (Pioneers) players to connect and work better with the digital world these days
I'm sure it probably doesn't make any difference but my CDj 1000's are actually mk3. Does the same still apply??

o sorry i was under the impression they did this. do they not play mp3 from the sd slot either?
Lol if they did I would have kept mine instead of getting 900's. That other old thing could play loops and samples from the SD the DMP-555

Ok, so I'm going to sell my CDj-1000's after helpful advice from you guys.
CDj-350's are mentioned(I presume these are the cheapest option). Which other cdj's will allow me to play straight from my laptop? And are there particular mixes that go better with certain cdj's?

The CDJ-400 it's out of production though.
As you say the cdj350 is the cheapest. But unlike your 1000's it has a smaller platter witch may take a bit of getting used to.
The cheapest one with link function is the cdj900.
I'm not after the cheapest, just wondered which models would allow me to connect my laptop directly. Think I would prefer a similar sized platter as you say.
So is the term "link function" what I am looking for? I take it the mixer is irrelevant with regards to playing off my laptop. Any djm mixer suggestions??

Uhmm in a usual setup (As far as i know...)
Your DVS will be outputting towards the soundcard of your CDJ ,
The CDJ will output to your HARDWARE mixer and then you do your effects and stuff there , so you can have sync , waveforms , library etc. in your dvs but you use the hardware mixer.
You could get a DJM-850/DJM-900/DJM-2000 and control your Software mixer with it (DJM's have effects them selves and pioneer has the EFX and RMX) With traktor you could use an F1/X1 for your effects and other functions. if you can't/don't want to map it.
you also could get a pioneer DJM-T1 for traktor and keep the 1000's.
If you want the easiest solution : CDJ-900/CDJ-2000 a DJM-900/DJM-2000 and a network splitter (In the DJM-2000 it is built in)
Using network cables from Computer , CDJ and DJM Towards the splitter (OR DJM-2000) and running rekordbox on the computer..

I appreciate the post but must admit I'm not clued up enough to understand it too much(I'm still reading up and learning here and elsewhere).
I'm not really bothered about effects etc, I just want to be able to play the tunes on my hardrive/computer on some cdj's and do some basic mixing from one tune to another. I'm getting that the cheapest(although dated) would be to keep the 1000's and buy something like traktor scratch and jobs a good un!!
Any feedback will be a help and I thank everyone who has took the time to give me their view(I'm sure it will help others too).

Traktor scratch would be your best option,
I have a friend that has just done it with his pioneer 1000's and he is like a kid with a new toy.

With regards to the traktor scratch, is the duo ok??(it's cheap) or as earlier suggested, should it be a10 or pro. Also I presume I don't need a seperate soundcard with a10 package but how about the duo? Pro?

It would seem NI has eliminated DUO; it's now Pro, Scratch Pro or LE. If you are using timecode (with the CDJ1000's) you need Scratch Pro.
Another option which should be cheaper than DVS would be to keep your CDJs as backups and just get a midi controller.
Pioneer has many great options for midi control of traktor and serato itch but they are a bit more expensive than others.
You could always buy a Kontrol S4 or some other midi controller with a built in soundcard that would allow you to use your CDJ1000s for DVS without the need to buy an external sound card.
@Ian > Actually, the Pioneer controllers are dropping in price right now so they are very competitive - there are some good bargains in picking up a T1 or S1.
