CDJ 2000 NOT RECOGNIZING MAC (HFS+) FORMATED IOMEGA HD

Hello, got some issues with my new external HD (iomega Ego 1TB USB/FW 400 800) formatted HFS+ from factory.  It's supposed to be a great reliable HD and just came out mid 2011 but for some strange reason I can see it and load information on it from Rekordbox but when I plugo to CDJ using the USB 2.0 it doesn't appear and I get the (NO USB message). The hard drive light actually comes on when plugging into the CDJ's so I don't think it's a power issue but the USB red light doesn't light up like with the USB flash drive.

I'm running MAC OS X 10.5 and I've used a couple USB flash drives that work just fine with it. Can't format it to FAT cause I wont be able to use it on my mac but I thought HFS+ was a recognized format for the CDJ's anyone experiencing the same issues? Solutions?

Thanks!

p,s, from iomega site:

In most cases, the computer will fail to format the drive as a Mac OS Extended (HFS+) partition using Master Boot Record. For best results, always choose GUID Partition Table (Intel) or Apple Partition Map (PowerPC). (ALREADY TRIED AND WON'T RECOGNIZE)

@ DJ AC > You should first make sure all your content on the drive is backed up on another drive, or on your computer. The you have to open "Disk Utility" found in your "Utilities" folder in the "Applications" folder. Once you have "Disk Utility" open, you should select the hard drive from the left pane. You can select either the title you gave the drive, or it's original title. Then select the "Erase" selection near the top middle section. Once you have selected that, choose the drop down list for "Format" and select "MS-DOS (FAT)" or (FAT32) if different. Once selected, choose your new title for the drive and click "Erase". This will then erase everything on your hard drive.

See screenshot below for example.

After all of that, you can re-load all of your music and files back onto your hard drive.

The reason it is not working is because it is programmed for Mac only. As Mac OS Extended. This means it will only work on a Mac computer. However, FAT32 or FAT works on Mac and PC, and therefore will connect to the CDJ's. The only downside to having to use FAT is that you cannot transfer a single file over 4.0GB. Doesn't happen very often, but you would need a separate drive for this purpose.

Let me know how it goes and if you have any more troubles.

I see from the manufacturer's site that the unit doesn't have a power-input; which leads me to believe the problem is not with the format of the drive but rather that it draws too much power -- and you don't have the ability to supply it with more unless you use a double-yoke USB cable like this one:

Thanks for the reply guys. @Foster already tried re formatting the disc to FAT and re loaded all my music. Rekordbox has recognize the HD and had no problem working with it and do my edits, as long as it's plugged into my mac. The problem comes at the time to plug into the cdj's. I do see that the power light is on and it's running (@PULSE)  but the USB red light never comes on once I plugged it. Causing it to show NO USB message on screen, And yes it comes with a double Y USB cable which is the one I've been using but still without luck even after giving it additional power.

I guess I'll just use this HD to keep my library which is around 800G's and use my other WD Studio to use at my gigs. The only problem by personal experience with Western Digital drives are that they're very sensitive so if the info is being transmitted from the HD to the CDJ's if you move it or it bounces most likely it will report errors . I've seen pretty embarrassing experiences with dj's that can't continue their sets because of this.

Is there a SOLID, PORTABLE and RELIABLE USB/FIREWIRE hard drive for MAC that you guys trust, use and have never had a problem with? Maybe it's time to get a new one.

@ DJ AC > My bad, I wasn't sure if that's what you meant. I'm just curious as to what you meant by "Can't format it to FAT cause I wont be able to use it on my mac"?

So you've tried formatting to FAT and you've tried plugging in both USB connections for extra power...

Have you tried it in both CDJ's as well?

When you connect the drive, does it feel like it powers up? (you know how that funny wobbly feeling is when you play with a running hard drive? lol)

Let me know when you can.

Thanks,

@ Forster, I tried both indeed, no luck. It's not the CDJ's I'm sure of that. I've connected USB fash drives and the WD HD and those work well.

@ DJ AC > Then Pulse was most likely right with it being power related. Unfortunately the only solution is to try to give it more power by connecting the second USB directly to a power unit or computer to provide enough power. But since you tried and it doesn't seem to work, I would maybe consider looking at buying a new hard drive, and this time one that comes with a power supply.

Unfortunately all of my drives are WD because I've been able to find them for decent prices and I like their service and return process since I used it once before. (I also did a major sales project on them so I'll be biased. lol) But I do know what you mean about WD drives being touchy sometimes. I've personally only noticed that on their cheaper "Element" drives though. All my "My Book" drives have been great and not touchy for me. It may depend on that, but if you don't want to test it out just in case, you can always go with "Seagate" as a lot of people use them. There are also other topics on these forums about hard drive brands to use. Just search around and you can find what others prefer to use.

I'm still curious as to what you meant by "Can't format it to FAT cause I wont be able to use it on my mac"? lol That's what made me think you hadn't tried FAT yet because it is compatible with Mac and PC.

But look around and you should find a lot of other preferences, and be sure to look at ones with a power supply just to be sure it receives enough. :)

Let me know if you have anymore questions and I'll try to help as much as I can.

Thanks,
