Looking to upgrade

Hi, I'm new to the forum and this is my first post so hello. I'm currently looking to upgrade my mixer and am in a dilemma over what to go for. I am currently using a low end Gemini mixer and am fed up of buying cheap low end mixers that end up showing signs of faults on the faders after a year or so. I like the look of the CDJ 350 and the option to record direct to USB is the key feature I like. My questions are to those who have used one is are they as sturdy as the more expensive DJM mixers? Do the stand up to the use and no fault like the cheaper mixers out there and retain the sound quality after say a year or so. What would you choose this brand new or a second hand DJM 500/600? I don't really need the four channels and never use any effects while mixing. It's only used occasionally in my home and never used out so my thoughts are it would do the job but before spending I'd likd to hear a few opinions on how it performs Cheers Matt

Hi there Matt, welcome to the forums!

I'm guessing you did mean to say the DJM350 rather than CDJ350 in your post. I think you'll find the quality of the DJM350 quite impressive, even in comparison to the top of the line DJM mixers out there.

I like to bring my 350 to some of my more mobile gigs as its a snappy little unit to pack in and stands up to a bashing. Going for a second hand DJM, by comparison, you don't know what issues it may have or what damage the user inflicted on it.

Quite honestly, I would think you'd like the unit and it would fit your needs. I would, however, encourage you to go test it out at a local store etc if the opportunity arises before you purchase.

Hi Gavin thanks for the reply. Yeah you're right it was the DJM350 I was referring too my mistake in the original post.
The issues you refer to about inflicted damage are my real concerns and I'm now almost tempted by the DJM350 but will as you recommend go and see one before buying. How do you find the record option on it? Do you have more than two sources as I'll be using 2 CDJ's and 2 1210's but can't see this being a problem as I use a 3 channel mixer at the moment and have no problems.

@Matt > You are welcome. I really like the record option, I think it was a nifty little feature added to the product that is a great selling point - especially for those DJs that like to record their mix and then upload to their website of choice.

My mobile setup is usually 1x DDJ-S1 connected to channel one of the DJM-350 and 1x CDJ2000 connected to channel two of the mixer (essentially I do everything on the DDJ but I have a suitable backup if needed).

You shouldn't have any problems with the setup you suggest (you will need to flick over the channel selector to choose Phono or Line in depending on your source).

The recording feature will be very useful as I am currently put off recording mixes due to the time it takes to convert them from cassette to mp3.

Having to change the channels over will be no different to what I'm used to so this doesn't bother me it was wmore the build quality of the mixer and the time it would last.  I'm going to have a look at one in person and see if I like it.  I'm now convinced that the record option of the 350 outweighs the 4 channels of the 600 as the only reason I would go for one of these is the 4 channels as I don't use effects whilst mixing.

hey matt i have 2 CDJ-350 and the DJM-350, gavin is right it is a great wee mixer, i have had them since april and am very impressed with the quality

i have used cheap mixers in the past and i found that the tiniest knock sent the up fader to zero, the upfaders on the DJM-350 are quite solid while knocking them with move them they are not so light that it will hit zero in the blink of an eye, and the cross fader is nice and snappy, i dont really scratch but if thats what your into i am sure the 350 is more than capable of doing everything you need it to do

@Matt Webb > Welcome to the forums!

I think you will be extremely pleased with the DJM-350! I used the DJM-400 for quite some time and loved all of it's capabilities.

Hopefully you can test one out before you commit as Gavin mentioned. :)

Thanks for the opinion. The problems I have had with cheap mixers is that over time the faders have worn out and the sound has started to distort and crackle if this makes any sense. I don't scratch at all I mainly play uk garage so do use the faders a fair bit to chop it up a little rather than using the crossfader as this could be why the cheaper ones were not up to the job.

I did look at the 400 but am now really liking the idea of the recording option. Going to try and get along to a shop to have a look at one.

Do you keep yours covered as this is something I'm considering now with my decks, CDJ's and mixer as at the moment they are uncovered.

@Matt > Yup, I keep all my dj kit in their own individual cases that I get from Swanflight.

@Matt > The DJM-400 is an older model as well, and since it is not in production, I would definitely say the DJM-350 would be the better model. It is newer, and has newer technology such as the recording to USB feature. :)

I also kept mine covered in a flight case with the CDJ-400's, and it's always good to look into protecting your equipment.

I'd love cases but not got the room really. I've seen some plastic cases so may get these eventually. I'm hoping to try and look at one this week. Would be good to get it then it's just upgraded headphones that I'll need.

Thanks for the help.

matt if you get a good case room shouldnt be an issue, i keep mine in a case at all times, i snapped a couple of pics there for ya, mine came as a set, but if you was to buy this case seperate it would cost £200

I upgraded from a Numark DXM-09 to a DJM-350 and the difference was massive! Brilliant little mixer, never had a problem with it whatsoever.
