I'm with you J - in fact, until reading this post I hadn't recognized my own tendency to avoid my setup. Before moving to the nexus, I used to mix any time I got the chance...now I find myself procrastinating and cramming before gigs. I can deal with having to cut the link to make track adjustments...my frustration is in planning out and rehearsing the more challenging bits of a set. I'm referring to creating those moments in a set that distinguish you from the rest of the crowd - I often find to accomplish this I have to push the capabilities of these players to the limit, which is where i feel this all breaks down. The difficulty level for this type of prep/rehearsal (which I imagine most who buy into this gear are striving for) is high enough already - now I almost always find myself fighting my equipment and trying to find 'workarounds' for what are already extremely complex mixing techniques. It's officially sucked all the fun out of it - it's just work now. I feel jipped. Phone support has been an absolute joke (in my experience, maybe others have had better luck) and I have yet to have a mod acknowledge any of my posts on here, despite how much time I spend testing and detailing out an issue (they seem quick to respond to questions from people who couldn't be bothered with reading the manual, which is frustrating). Then to sign on one day and find a thread CLOSED after we're told you can't use slip mode after using a hot cue?! What?!?!?! Oh and that they'll try to work within the 'limitations' of the hardware to address it??? Not holding my breadth on that one. The level of support on these units hurts my feelings. Closing threads, ignoring peoples' questions, reprimanding members for spreading rumors?! People aren't venting on here for fun - this is symptom of a very expensive product in need of attention and resources. Where's the cavalry?

I went to the local bicycle store today, actually the past few days trying to find a bike I will enjoy riding. I found a bike that I liked however the seat was hard, so uncomfortable that I was about to just forget it and walk away. The lady told me about wearing the padded shorts and that they could add a better "Gel" style seat. I wasn't sold that those few things would make a difference but I was able to convince her to let me try on the padded shorts and take the bike for a spin. I came back and she asked how it was, I told her 80% better and she looked at me and said, " if you're not comfortable you're not going to want to ride" as she had a smile on her face that she knew she sold the bike and solved my issue. Her comment is correct however and got me thinking.
Recently I have been avoiding my Pioneer DJ setup. I have gone days without turning it on, heck weeks actually. I just forced myself the other day to play a little. It's not that I don't want to or that I lost interest. What I think it comes down to is the issues of having to constantly unplug the LINK to get into RB to make changes, set ending loops and so on. VERY LITTLE IS ON THE FLY! It's very frustrating and as the lady at the bike shop said... I'm not a Pro DJ nor do I want to be but if I was I would really be more upset with the lack of on the fly features. So what my withdraw from mixing is, having to unplug everything in the middle of a set to adjust or set this or that. Sure it might only take a bit and once it's done it's done but that's until the next song... or the new way I want to bring in or out of a song. Things that could be done now to make RB and CDJ more compatible are not being done or at least Pioneer isn't hinting. Each DJ has his/her own way to do things, I have mine. I'd rather adjust on the fly than sit in front of my laptop in MANY cases!
I know this has been talked about many times, this story at the bike shop hit home as to why I have been avoiding mixing lately. I'm not sure why or if Pioneer has ever given an answer why they don't incorporate on the fly adjustments for everything or if they have stated they are looking into it etc... But I know I'm not the only one asking for these features so one would think Pioneer would make it so....? Why we can adjust some things and not others is odd IMO as well.
Granted DJing has come a long way...

True creativity is about working with limitations and finding ways around them. I don't see james zabiela struggling.
Sounds like you both need to try out a more flexible software based solution, cdjs probably aren't for you.
@Phil, So instead of fixing things that can be done to make things easier/better someone should just give up on CDJS or find other software (That isn't supported with the Nexus features)? Where is the evolution in DJing in that case? Imagine 8 years ago had I post, I wish I had SYNC on my CDJ (Or any other feature that has been added to a CDJ)... We need to move forward Phil and not give up on what is currently available and in this case add features to software or CDJ's that can be done now. If other software can do it than IMO Pioneer needs to step up instead of having people say, maybe you should find other software or CDJ's aren't for you. CDJ's are for me, Pioneer just needs to support them better!
But we're not talking about 'moving things forward' though, we're talking about really specific details, that are preventing you from using your decks. If those details are that important that they are preventing you using £1600 decks, then the cdjs are not for you.
I think What they are trying to say Phil is that the CDJ 2000/2000 Nexus Prolink system with using Rekordbox. and using everything the way it was advertised to us all. Does work for them. But that is why they purchased the Pioneer gear.... But now that they have the gear and it is not living up to what Pioneer said it does, this is what is causing them to have issues. Not that they bought a product and the product don't do what they want it to do. But they bought a product that said it does XXXXX. And that they have this product because they wanted to do XXXXX. They have now found out that they are having a hard time doing XXXXX. Me myself... I love my cdjs and can be patient and wait for these s/w fixes. Hope that all made sense?? LOL
Don't get me wrong. I love the CDJ's. however there are things that make it frustrating to the point I avoid mixing... I don't think Pioneer had this in mind and if other software can do it... I'm not so much on here now stating the same old complaints (But I am I guess) but more so, it has come to a point where I avoid mixing because it can be more trouble than what it's worth of my time at the moment. I have honestly just shut everything down and walked away just because I got tired of unplugging the ethernet net cord in the middle of a set, having to open up RB, make adjustments, set end loops or whatever and have to reset everything back up. Sure one or 2 times isn't a huge deal but not being able to make ALL adjustments on the fly is a pain for me. Maybe not for the next guy but I want easy and fun, not a freaking chore to have fun. Pioneer adds options to make things flow smoothly and yet fails at others.
why don't you just ditch the pro-link and export your collection to a USB drive and play off that?
you can adjust everything on the fly and after you're done you can re-import all those changes to cues, beatgrids, hotcues, loops etc back into your rekordbox collection. it's a million times more rewarding than playing off a laptop in my opinion.
@ pete - i don't think that is what they are saying, pioneer never advertised these 'features' - they are just personal work flow enhancements that they want to be made because it suits their requirements better. there's nothing wrong with this at all - i'm all for having cdjs that work better for everyone but what i'm saying is don't hold your breath waiting for a 'fix' from pioneer because it may never come (as nothing is broken). if you're cdjs are gathering dust because this 'feature' is a show stopper for you then they might be better off with another system that does have this feature. £1600 per deck is an expensive paper weight.
i think part of the problem is everyone expects a firmware fix for everything nowadays but sometimes you just need to approach a problem from a different direction to get the best result, under the circumstances. we're all a bit spoiled and nothing is ever going to be perfect! (this is not a criticism of the original posters, just a comment that a lot us us are guilty of).
@Justin.. I will say that you can stop playing with your gear cause it is a hassle... But Pioneer still has your money. So all you are hurting is yourself.
@ Phil. I understand your point of view but disagree with you on one point. I don't think we are spoiled.. Not at all. When you spend Thousands of dollars on something, you expect it to work PERFECTLY. No Excuses. When you buy a TV, a car, etc... You expect it to be perfect. And while I haven't experienced a lot of the issues that others have on the forum. I personally think the things that DON'T work perfectly with the cdj's like sync. I embrace these things and work around them. But that is just me... Issues like players crashing and locking up? That is not good. If I had to disconnect something every time I played I would be upset as well... I haven't had those issues. But I still stand behind the djs that are having issues with there players because I feel when you purchase something it should work perfectly. And that is not being spoiled. It's just getting what you paid for. And we ALL paid a lot!
While I always enjoy a healthy debate over 'true creativity' (?), I'll pass and focus on the issue here. I never claimed that amazing things can't be done with these units vis-a-vis James Zabiela, but representing that he's having no issues off-camera??? I've put together amazing sets with the nexus decks and I'm certain I leave the impression to many listeners that the decks are very capable and that there are no issues with my equipment - sadly it it not the case. Example - if I want to use slip mode after using hot cues, I can't. That's not in any of the literature advertising the capabilities of these decks. Discovering this outside of the return period and hearing 'these decks aren't for you' is unfair to say the very least. I'm not asking for Pio to add features that tailor the CDJs to my workflow, I want to use slip mode whenever I want, sync to be AT LEAST on par with its competitors and loops not to drift. The fact that I'm struggling to get support on $6k of equipment with regard to advertised features is embarrassing. I've always said these decks do way more right than they do wrong and give due credit to Pio. I'm not being unreasonable, I'm simply supporting a fellow user here in an appeal for a fair level of customer service. If $6k doesn't afford me that, there should be an option to purchase a separate tech support package (similar to Apple) so that I'm not left to be ignored on forums.
To Pete's point, I'm even a bit more liberal. Don't get me wrong Pete, I think you are fully entitled to expect perfection at this price point. I personally was not expecting perfection as I respect the complexity in making these units all things to all people (perhaps I'm a bit soft in this regard). Going into this, I fully expected to cope with workarounds as it's a necessary evil with any setup out there, but in my opinion, the degree to which workarounds are necessary is unreasonable.
Just because someone can put ducttape on something to get it working again doesn't mean the issues shouldn't be fixed. Companies release products and sometimes customers come up with tweaks that can make it better. If I can adjust on the fly somethings and other dj software works better using the nexus it stands to reason pioneer can do the same.?!

We are here, voluntarily, to support Pioneer's users and we aim to try to deliver the best level of support that we can. So if you find a topic marked [CLOSED] and an answer in there from us its likely because we've fully answered the question to the best of our ability and there can't be any more done for the question at hand - its a definite answer. If its something we've to query with engineers, we'll leave it open and respond once we hear back. We never ignore peoples questions - again, pushing through our workflow we'll endeavour to answer everything as quickly as we can. Some things may not be answered as quickly as others. That usually means we're setting up our gear and doing numerous tests ourselves so we can deliver an accurate answer. Yes, as per the Terms of Service laid out by Pioneer Corporation, we cannot tolerate any rumours because they are exactly that, rumours and they serve no one any good. If Pioneer has information, you'll hear it from Pioneer first. I appreciate your frustrations but I hope you know we are here to help you as best we can with the resources we have at our disposal.
@Justin > rekordbox was originally created as a music management system (and thats what it still is). More and more however it is becoming almost like a fully fledged digital vinyl system. I'm sorry you have your frustrations with it - thats not what playing music is about. rekordbox is a system that aims to facilitate DJing and the organisation of music. There are some new features coming that should make everything a little easier - we constantly take your feedback and provide it to the engineers - we've built on a lot of features that users have suggested already.
Also, I'd ask you to ensure you have "Allow analysis while LAN connected" selected in the rekordbox preferences.
We're always appreciative of your feedback and endeavour to make Pioneer products the best they can be.

Thanks Gavin - apologies in case any of that came off as a personal attack...very much appreciate that you guys are looking out for us. The subject of my grievance is Pio - not the mods. The fact that you guys do this pro bono is a testament to the lack of support from Pio. Given the degree of consumer issues with the nexus, it's shocking to me that they haven't bolstered support. Pushing gear at this price point and calling for volunteers to cope with the lion's share of consumer issues?! I'm mystified...
