Question before Purchase Toriaz

Hey everyone,

I'm looking to purchase the Toriaz and wanted some feedback, on what  I'm intending to use it for:

-to use as a live performance tool for my own tracks/ stems

- to use as a remix tool for my own tracks/ stems

its kinda a big investment, but if it excels at my intended above use, I'm gonna pull the trigger.

Thanks

Hello Creal,

If your looking interested in purchasing the Toraiz I would suggest to check out is video with some in depth details.

The first link is from the Pioneer Dj Youtube page.

The 2nd Link is from a  Dj Tech Tools Review and overview.

i dont own one but you can only play 32 second samples so if you stems are over that size is a no go, if you use loop based samples rather than whole songs you should be OK

Great point, thanks for bringing it to my attention.

So I guess that leads me to another question: let's say I want to record a performance that lasts say 5 minutes, can I save that to a flash drive if it's plugged in? Or is it straight to the internal storage?

I am (or rather planning) to use it exactly as you intend , save carrying a lap top. A few points:

1. Yes each stem/sample can be max of 32 secs- i have not found this to be a limitation

2. with the arrangement, scene and pattern set up you can play your tracks live, remix with some limitations e.t.c

3. EFX for now is bare bones , but they are excellent typical pioneer quality.

4. For now it doesn't equal say ableton live , but the potential remains

5. You cant edit the samples precisely so you have ensure the samples you load are pre edited

I honestly think the Sp 16 is an excellent product. The Octatrack, Virus TI, Tempest were all released with fundamental OS gaps and have developed as a product through the years. It is possible Sp 16 takes that path and beyond. Like most products these days , my sense is Pio Dj will take it to its 70 or 80% potential over the next 2 years and release a new product. Thats how they make their money

I already bought one. What I find to be a limitation for spontaneous, improvised live performance is that you cannot pre-listen to the samples before sending them to main out. Let me elaborate. Suppose

- you have the stereo out of TORAIZ as input to channel 4 on a DJM 900

- if the fader of channel 4 is down on the DJM 900 you can use the headphone plugged into the DJM 900 to listen to samples to your heart's content

- if the fader of channel 4 is up there is no way to listen to samples before adding them to the mix.

- Even if you plug a separate set of headphones into the TORAIZ itself there is no way to pre-listen to samples before sending them to the stereo out of the TORAIZ. Or at least I haven't been able to figure it out. There is a cool little onboard mixer on the TORAIZ and it allows you the option of sending tracks to channels other than the main and also the option to listen to different channels in your headphones. That's very cool (though cumbersome in a live performance) BUT every one of the 16 tracks are by default sent to the main stereo out. So even if in the mixer of the TORAIZ you select a track and send it to another channel it will be kept in the main stereo out. So you can have a submix in your headphone if you wish but there is no way to cut that sub mix from the main stereo out.

++++

I find the above scenario very limiting because I can't always remember where I stored every one of the max possible 256 samples in a project. Even if I remember where I stored a certain sample I don't necessarily remember if it's in the right key to mix into the current track that might be playing on the other three channels of the DJM 900.

I hope it helps with your decision.

Thanks everyone, that helps tremendously.

Definitely some areas for improvement, but nothing I see so far, that stops me from using it for my intended purpose.

Last question just to confirm: what about recording your performance- Does your performance get saved to the Toriaz, flash drive, or is it optional?
