v1.2 Midi: Is it possible to connect an USB MIDI controller to Toraiz?

I am a little bit puzzled if there is the possibility to connect an external USB Midi-controller like e.g. the Korg Nanokontrol (or Launchcontrol etc.) directly via USB to the Toraiz (without PC)?

The document says there is a "USB Midi" function, but mentions only for controlling with a PC.

But when I look at the back at the toraiz, there is only a Slot of USB-out, not a USB-In.

Hi Cie,

Hope you're well.

Here is a breakdown of the MIDI IN capability taken from the manual:

1. MIDI IN

A new feature MIDI IN has been added: MIDI messages can be received from an external MIDI device. You can use sound sources and manipulate various parameters on this unit using other external device.

Connect a MIDI device to the DIN MIDI terminals

  1. Connect the MIDI OUT terminal of an external MIDI device with the MIDI IN terminal of this unit using a MIDI cable.

  2. Tap the [UTILITY] at HOME screen to open the UTILITY screen.

  3. Select [DIN MIDI] or [DIN MIDI (THRU H/W)] at MIDI I/F SELECT in the MACHINE SETTING category.

Connect a MIDI device to the USB terminal

  1. Connect your computer with the USB-B terminal of this unit using a USB cable.

  2. Tap the [UTILITY] at HOME screen to open the UTILITY screen.

  3. Select [USB MIDI] at MIDI I/F SELECT in the MACHINE SETTING category.

For example, you can connect the TORAIZ SP-16 to your computer and have it running an Ableton session (USB MIDI).

If you have any other questions, please get in touch.

Best regards,

Hi Stephen,

thank you for your quick response.

Then the short answer of my question is: no ;)

However, you should be able to connect a standalone midi controller like Doepfer Pocket Dial or Behringer BCR to the Toraiz and control it without computer.

Not really a No. If your controller is USB class compliant then you will need a USB Host (Kenton makes one, there are others as well) to which you hook up your controller, then midi out from the host unit to the SP 16.

Ironically Pio DJ support is giving you a map not really showing you how to get there!
