Ableton Live 9 with DJM-900nxs sound output kills MIDI keyboard inputs

I'm cross posting this to both the Pioneer and Ableton forums.

I'm having a problem with Ableton Live 9 Lite where connecting a Pioneer DJM-900nxs2 mixer as the sound output stops all midi keyboards from working.

Specifically, the moment you select the DJM900nxs2's ASIO driver as the sound output, any instruments in Ableton cease receiving midi signals from connected keyboards.

This happens for multiple midi devices including an M-Audio Keystation 88, a Korg NanoKEY2 and a Launchpad. The midi receive light (top-right in Live) still flashes when you press a key on the midi keyboards but it's not received by any of the instruments.

If you switch to a different sound output (e.g. the PC's internal audio), or any other ASIO output, it starts working fine again.

This occurs on Windows 10 x64, with the latest versions of Live 9 Lite, DJM-900nxs2 ASIO drivers and and DJM900nxs2 firmware (latest versions as of 2018-03-18), while running the 64-bit version of Live.

The workaround is to revert to the 32-bit version of Live where it works fine with the identical configuration.

Given this would be a pretty popular club setup (i.e. plug your laptop into the USB input of DJM900nxs2 to use it as a soundcard while performing with Live) it would be great if Pioneer and Ableton could give this some focus and fix it.

Note this may be the same problems as reported here https://forums.pioneerdj.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/115000237503-DJM-900-nexus-ASIO-MIDI-bug-with-Ableton-Live and here https://www.ableton.com/answers/problems-using-live-with-djm-900-nexus-2.

So, what say you Ableton and Pioneer? Can you fix this please?

Have you checked that the MIDI channels aren't conflicting?

Yes.

Anyway, I have the MIDI button turned off on the mixer so it shouldn't be sending signals. And Ableton is told to only use it as a sound card and not as a MIDI input.

And, if this was conflicting, it wouldn't work in 32-bit mode either.

Same issue here with Win10 + Ableton 10 x64 + DJM 850... and yeah, latest drives, latest firmware, lastest everything!

It looks like every DJM does this - 900 Nexus mk1 does this, 750 mk2 does this and my 850 too... update those drivers please! For such an expensive mixers It sould be working on Windows too, dont you think?

I also got macbook air, on MAC it works fine.

I'm having the same issues here with DJM 850s, Ableton live 9.7.7 and Ableton Push 1. Windows 10 64bit, fully updated OS, mixer firmware and driver utility. MIDI sends to a pad for a split second then nothing It's un useable. Switching audio interface to any of Denon X1700 mixer, Native instruments Audio 4, Numark Dio, or windows on board sound solves the problem

Theres still not a solution to this and you all were made aware in march, very disappointing.. anyone who uses ableton and a DJM to dj on windows 10 x64 has been kinda left out :/ i use midi automation for a number of things. Unfortunate.

Hi folks,

I ran into this problem today with my DJM-850 where Ableton Push would play one or two notes and then stop responding even though MIDI is getting into Ableton. I narrowed it down to the Pioneer driver as you all have.

I have also found a workaround / fix. It's quite simple:

- install Voicemeeter for free: https://www.vb-audio.com/Voicemeeter/

- set your ASIO driver to Voicemeeter in Ableton

- inside the Voicemeeter mixer set output A1 to ASIO: Pioneer DJM850 in the top right

Voicemeeter will now use the Pioneer ASIO driver outside of Ableton Live and everything works as it should, and you still get the low latency of the driver.

Thought I'd post it here in case it helps anyone else!

Thanks,

Simon

Simon I love you.... Not one employee at ableton or pioneer would help. They would just tell me it was each others fault over and over again. thank you so much you have no idea... you just made a $4k setup finally work!! and for free, laughable almost haha

Thanks Simon, great tip!

For Pioneer - we are still waiting for you guys to fix your critically broken driver, there is no reason for it to take months/years. It's a really bad look for your company.

Glad it's working for you guys - I'm one of Ableton's Certified Trainers so I knew that it wasn't Ableton that was at fault. Hopefully Pioneer take notice - this can't be a complicated thing for them to fix.
