Need some help understanding mono versus stereo - DJM 450

Hi,

I don't think this is a problem with the mixer. It's probably just me not understanding some basic tenet of how sound works. If you can, please go easy on me and if possible, try to keep any response more focused on solution and less focused on the theory behind it.

Here's the goal: Have the same sound come out of all of the speakers.

I thought that's what mono meant. However, regardless of whether or not I'm in mono or stereo, the left channel is way bright and crispy, and the right sounds like it's playing under water.

Here's the setup: (for home troubleshooting purposes)

Rekordbox 5.4.1 DVS > DJM 450 > XLR (right channel) > Yamaha MG10 > XLR > 2 Alto TS 212s

The real reason I want to get this figured out is that the club where we play has a very complex amateur speaker setup and it's way hard for me to make sure that it's sounding right when we get set up. Thanks for any help!

Mono should be sending an equal signal out to the speakers.  Have you tried using your set up in the club in mono with L/R both hooked up?  Left channel can send a more diverse signal but should not have the right sounding distorted or bad in comparison.

It's very much the case that mono is not sending the same signal out to both speakers. The left is definitely a more diverse signal, some bass (not very much), crispy highs, but the right is essentially all bass, maybe some mid, and no highs (sounds muffled like its playing underwater). When pan'd to the middle, it sounds great! Almost as if the channels are doing 2 different jobs, as is my understanding of "stereo" sound.

I just tried hooking up both L and R, in mono, to 2 different channels on the PA mixer, pan'd them to the right and left, and the behavior is exactly the same as it was (signal maybe 20% louder with the 2nd channel plugged in).

I also went back to factory reset- then made the changes that I want: Master Att.: -6db, Master Output: MONO, and there was no change.

Since the club setup is so wonky (2 QSC 10s, QSC sub, 2 JBL EON 1s, 2 EV 12's, all are powered, some of it chained, some of it not, its a mess) I wanted to make sure that there weren't any issues in my gear before I venture cleaning up that mess with my scant knowledge of audio engineering.

Since it's abundantly clear that the signals are not equal in mono, in fact, it seems to only want to output in stereo does it mean that I should look in to having the mixer serviced?

Well, my DJ partner (that genius) chimed in when I linked him to this thread, and... I think I have a blown/disconnected tweeter on what was the R speaker. In the end, it went back to me not really understanding mono v. stereo. Since I really thought that that was the source of the problem, I was hearing the the working speaker as being all highs, when really it was the whole signal. Thanks for taking the time to respond.
