you are completely right.
Looping with an encoder (and moving it, by the way) is the superior method.
however you will find no simpathy in this forum.

SeguiPioneer Loop controls need severly updating weve gone backwards
I started life on traktor perhaps the creme de la creme of looping control via a single encoder knob, it was simple and perfect and took up minimal room on a controller
i then moved onto a ddj rr / ddj rx / ddj RZ and had to get used to a button section for looping, it was fine and very usable, made sense.
i moved onto the new ddj1000 and finally settled on a ddj800, what the hell happened to the looping control and who signed that off?? the deisgn and layout is terrible especially on the 800, what is the need for 8 buttons of varying sizes, colours and indentation amounts to come up with the desired loop?
please revise on future controllers with a single encoder or at least back to the RR/RX/RZ implementation.

on top of having all those buttons to create a loop, you then have to use a shift comand + button to increase/decrease the loop size. seems absolutley insane to me.
I actually dont like the encoder style. I want to hit a button and have the loop size set without having to look at the screen and make the size correct. Muscle memory wins every time
