CDJ 3000 Sound

They are wonderful, love them already but have noticed they are not as forgiving with mp3's as the 2000NXS2's were. Perhaps this is the new sound engine. The Kick drums on some mp3's have distortion unlike the 2000's. I am having to be very careful with the sound sources for my shows. Is there an update coming to correct and enhance sound sources, especially Kick drums? With a quality mp3 recording source the sound is awesome, it would be nice for all to sound great :). It seems to be the kicks that are affected.

We haven't had any reports of the players causing distortion, but if you feel there is an issue with one or more of your players, either contact your retailer or file an inquiry ticket here and our support team will gather some additional information to assist you in resolving this issue.

I am using the CDJ3000's with my DJM900NXS2, I have tried new cabling as well as line and digital and virtually every other track has this same issue with Kick drum distortion. The rest of the track sounds awesome, I have compared the sound to my CDJ2000NXS2 work. It's an overall sound improvement but the Kicks do sound better on the NXS2's. I would be interested to know if any other Psy dj's have noticed this. It's not my headphones, I have been using the X10's and HD25's for a long time, even sound outputted on external devices picks up the same distortion.

Thanks Pulse, yes thought they would have a different DAC, overall the sound is great, it's just the higher frequency kick drums, the bass heavy kicks are fine but the higher frequency kicks are affected. My XPRS speaker system picks it up. It occurs on both players. All firmware's for both the CDJ's and DJM are up to date. Comparing track for track with the NX2's output, there is a definite difference in the handling of the higher frequency kicks, as you say the DAC is different. The sound is great overall, it's just a niggle that is plaguing my mind when mixing as I spend many an hour on the decks lol.

I have just been going through the forum to see if anyone has experienced something similar and it seems they have. I have tried the tracks with the Master Tempo off and the distortion on the kicks seems to disappear. It is most off putting and it seems to effect 80% of Psytrance tracks being heavily kick drum based. It's like a whipping sound on the kicks. I do love the overall sound but there is obviously a bug with the Master Tempo.

Hello,

I can confirm this behaviour. Especially kick heavy tracks suffer from this problem for me. I thought I was the only one noticing this because there are no reports about this. I cant remember having this issue on the CDJ 2000 models.

An update to the Master Tempo algorithm could help with this. On smaller systems the issue isn't as pronounced as on a big systems. It would be nice if it would be fixed by the time the clubs reopen.

Correcting an earlier note - the CDJ-2000NXS2 and CDJ-3000 use the same DAC; the AK4490EQ.

Have you guys checked what setting you have for the output attenuator in the 3000's utility menu?

I have tried every attenuation setting on the CDJ. But the issue stays no matter how low I set it. As soon as Master Tempo is turned off the issue disappears.

Just to clear up things a bit: I wouldn't describe the sound as distortion but rather artefacting. To me it sounds like a like a high pitched metallic hiss. If needed I can provide examples with MT on and off and you can hear it for yourself. The problem also occurs when the pitch is at 0%.

I know with such algorithms there is always a bit of quality loss but I haven't had the issue on the 2000 models. Serato has the same Problem with their algorithm, this was one of the reasons I switched to Pioneer. Sadly the 3000s suffer from this issue as well.

Yes I would have to agree Nico it is a better description of the noise. Also on turning the Master Tempo off I have lost the red jog wheel indicator light :( as well as the remaining track time warning lights. I have tried in the utilities turning the jog wheel indicator light off and on and no effect :(.

I too have tried the Attenuator settings and the noise is still there. Master Tempo off the noise on the kicks goes.

I am hoping this issue with the Master Tempo can be sorted via an update, otherwise I am going to have to send them back for replacements :(

I have the same problem with my players. Something is wrong with the master tempo. The first time I have reported this problem was at the beginning of December, and there is still no solution to this problem.

I was thinking of buying the third player, but now I'm thinking of returning these two that I have. This is not a 100% functional product. Please correct this problem with the master tempo, this is not a small problem.

@pulse it seems Pioneer should take this problem more seriously as more and more people keep reporting it. I can provide further recordings with evidence if needed. The noise with mastertempo enabled at 0% pitch is even clearly visible on a spectogram. Just because some cant hear it (maybe because it is to high pitched for their ears) doesnt mean the problem doesnt exist. For me it is very audible and distracting.

The sound was noticeable straight away to me, Kick heavy tracks suffer immensely, it is most annoying. Please get the Master Tempo issue sorted Pioneer, please. We hope to have festivals on the horizon and clubland reopening if things go well and this problem will affect sets and the crowds will notice it for sure.
