Using tags - XDJ-RX

Hiya,

I've spent a lot of time adding tags to all my music in order to give me the option to drill down into sub genres, track elements, keys etc.

I've only just started using my XDJRX so am getting used to the features still.

The logical way to view similar tagged tracks would be to press the 'tag list' button while playing the master track. Unfortunately, when I do this I get a blank screen.

My tags are embedded in the tracks because I can view them when I click 'info' (they seem to sit in the comments section).

Any idea how to copy these across so I can view them correctly and search with them?

THANKS!

;)

Hi - is anyone able to help with this one?

Still struggling with this issue and I imagine it's fairly simple to resolve given that both Rekordbox and the XDJ-RX are Pioneer products.

Any clues would be massively appreciated.

Thanks!

Pioneer DJ's Tag List is basically the same as Serato's Prepare list.

Hi - I think you may have misunderstood.

I've already prepared tags...I've ticked loads of obscurities to help drill down into my library. This works really well within the Rekordbox software.

I press the 'tag list' button on the XDJ-RX and no tags seem to be visible - they've copied across to the comments section it would seem.

Am I doing something wrong? What's the purpose of this 'tag list' button on the XDJ-RX?

You're not doing anything wrong.  You're just misunderstanding the function of the Tag List.  The Tag List is a place where you can send certain songs that, while scrolling through your library, you decide you want to save for later.  It has nothing to do with the actual mp3 tag data.

Aaah - thanks so much for clarifying.

Questions questions:

1. See attached image - the tags feature on the actual Rekordbox application is really handy way to sift through embedded tags and drill down to recommended tracks of a similar tempo and key (it's the reason I switched to this software in the first place)...when you have 1000s of tracks this is genius for quickly picking up forgotten files on the fly. I've found it to be so useful.

Is there a way I can quickly do similar embedded tag searches on the XDJ-RX and filter by tempo, key, genre etc? I'd rather not change the actual genre because I don't think it makes sense to have loads of these.

2. Going back to the 'tag list' button - how do I add tracks to this?

Thanks! :)

Having looked further into this, there doesn't seem to be an option to sort by comment. How do I add this to the 'sort' menu?

...getting there now - managed to customise the menu so I can now see and sort by comment.

This still isn't fit for purpose though as I can't search by tag. It's standard for tracks to have multiple tags (sometimes as many as five) and there isn't enough room to view all these. In the screen grab example, I can only see a single tag, 'electro disco'.

Any ideas on how to improve this experience?

Thanks for the input.

It's a bit confusing, I know.  The terminology can be a little tricky.  Hopefully I can help.

We have already established what the Tag List is.  Check page 22 of the XDJ-RX user manual for info on how to utilize this feature.

The screen shot you posted showing all the different genres is showing what is called the Track Filter.  This is something we introduced along with the release of the CDJ-2000NXS2.  This allows you to search deeply for songs that have very specific tags that are applied by the user to each track using the My Tag feature, shown here:

Each category and each component can be completely customized.

There are no controls to access this feature on the XDJ-RX.

Cool - that helps. Thanks!

All is not lost because I can just add my tags as playlists and search for them that way.

I don't suppose you can recommend a youtube tutorial series for the XDJ-RX. There seem to be loads and I'd like a complete walk through/idiots guide if possible.

Cheers!

Those tags are just the magic thing about RB.  Allow the tags to be saved into your ID3 "Comments" field (somewhere in the settings of rekordbox you can allow this).  The great idea behind it, is that you can make "intelligent playlists" based on those tags/comments (you can create new tags too, or remove some).  Have your intelligent playlist filter on "<comment>" LIKE "<tagname>" and all your playlists are updated automatically as you change your tracks' tag.

I've actually saved them as playlists now - seems easier to search that way (see above comments re: the viewing of comments and lack of room to see all tags).

I'm now considering using the comments field to display 'mixed in key' info.

(that is - unless anyone can think of a better place to put the camelot wheel codes?)

How do you use the Filter on the XDJs? I press filter but can't do anything once the screen loads

@Shaun > Are you selecting criteria to filter? You'll see the number of tracks at the top of the screen, and that will change based on the criteria you choose. Once you exit the filter, you're left with only those tracks that meet the previous selection AND the filter.

Looking to buy an XDJ RZ and the ‘My Tags’ looks like a powerful feature. Is it still only accessible on the rekordbox software and not on the units, even the RZ and nexus range?

Did you mean RX or XZ?

The XZ and RX2 have this functionality on the unit, but not the original RX model.

No worries! We have so many similar model names I have to ask... I make the same mistakes myself. ;)

The XZ can access them here:

Press and hold to edit the criteria, press once to toggle the filter on/off.
