hi,
well I have to say, after owning 8 different MPC's over the years, the SP-16 (v1.30) is awesome to use! Its GUI very well designed and the build quality is very solid. There are some things that are missing or needed though...
--------------------------------------------------------------
1. Sample Normalization:
when sampling from older gear, we really need to normalize the sample!
------------------------
2. Sample Trim audio deletion?:
maybe I missed something ? But we need to be able to permanently delete unwanted parts of a Sample that has been recorded or imported.
"delete selected sample range", "deletion is permanent, are you sure you wish to delete"
------------------------
3. Track Mode: play a sliced Loop's Slice Points randomly OPTION, without playing entire loop.
(so rather than being in Slice Mode, you are in Track Mode, and when you hit the Track's pad, it can cycle randomly through your Splice Markers...
example: you sample 16 different Closed Hihat samples from an 808. And when you are in track mode, you keep hitting the Pad and it randomly triggers any of the 16 Slice points. Therefore, triggering any of the 16 hi hat samples for an orgianic feel.)
------------------------
4. TR-909 Velocity/Accent Weak and Strong mode for Trigger step-sequencing like the real 909!!
The biggest weakness seems to be not having a half-velocity level mode for the 909/808 style Triggers.
"BASS DRUM, SNARE DRUM, TOM, CLOSED HI-HAT: Each time you press the button, the setting cycles between off - weak - strong (accented)."
------------------------
5. Delay FX: very disappointed with the limitations of the Delay. There are no Dotted and Tripplet 1/4, 1/8, 1/16??
Please give us a "analog Tape delay, so when we make timing changes, the sound warps accordingly, like almost every other synth or sampler has these days (software or hardware)
------------------------
6. How about 2 FX per Track?
------------------------
7. Reverbs Give us specific styles! Plate, Hall, Reverse, Tape Echo etc...
------------------------
8. Edit START of first SLICE point.
I can't seem to be able to edit the START point of the first Slice point. This is really bad if my samples have silence before the first drum sound.
------------------------
9. Full Octave+/- pitch range for the Slider? Like my MPC and SP-12.
+/- 2 notes is very limiting for real-time manipulation.
------------------------
10. a second LFO
------------------------
11. FILL selected Sample range or Slice with SLIENCE.
if you want to delete a Slice without messing up timing of the file, fill it with Silence Option.
------------------------
thanks guys! Be great to get these in for V1.4

some good sugestions
1- I have a feeling it automatically normalise when you load to a track. I've not checked it properly but it always seems to be a good level after I've recorded something and then loaded it to a pad.
2- Yes, the base sample editing could be improved.
3- This would be a great feature, at least add Slice as modulation destination for touch strip and LFO
4- There is a velocity parameter that you can step lock, select pad, set velocity to 100, set triggers then hold the trigger you want to accent and set velocity to 127.
5- A tape style delay would be awesome.
6- Word!
7- Yes, I've grown to like the reverb a bit more but some other options would be good.
8- set an extra slice (1 more than you need) then shift the range with the area parameter so the second slice is first pad, then you can edit the first slice point. Agree its a bit weird though.
9- you can set the touch slider to 2, 4 or 12 semitones range in the utility menu
10 - yes, and audio rate capable. or a loopable second envelope, or 2 envelope and 2 LFO!!
11 - I'm hopeful that the slice mode would be enhanced with pitch, reverse, volume for each slice. There was a video demo and some dude was dropping hints about new features and this was eluded to.
OH WAIT!! Pioneer, I forgot the most important feature request of all...
1. ZERO CROSS PIONT LOCATOR for Sample looping.
To avoid looping point clicks.
"the idea behind it - is that its possible to tidy up a clicky loop, by finding similar start and end points, the trick is to try to get the cycle of a wave so that its a smooth curve with no stepped or immediate transition through the cross over, as if it was one continuous wave shape."
OR
At least XFade Looping ( Cross Fade looping the beginning and end of the loop points)
Looping on this 'professional' Sampler is WORSE than my 1986 Emu Emax1 Sampler.
The Emax had AUTOLOOP (it would find best matching cross points near your chosen Start/End points for a seamless click free loop)
And it had SPLICE which is Crossfade looping ( where it would take the start and end of your loop and cross mix them into each other, another seamless loop).
Toraiz SP16 team,
Please improve Sampling tools first , before adding "live sampling" make it work better than a 1980's sampler.
That should be the dev teams number 1 priority
Thanks guys for making the sp-16 already kick ass, but my features list is essential and should of been in OS 1.2
Another crucial yet simple feature that must be added is we must be able to enter the original BPM of the sample in case the auto detect is incorrect. Many of the loops I load into the sampler are read as double time and therefore played extra slow... We need to be able to enter the correct BPM so that the time stretch is accurate to the rest of the master tempo.
^ In sample edit screen select edit button and you can enter the BPM of the sample from there.
I think there is an issue with it as it would appear you can't enter BPM/Bars separately? Its not anything I really use as I don't use loops other than something I would of just recorded from the modular or some percussion I played in. But I think you may have a problem as If you set the BPM to the correct setting then the bars will just halve and the sample will play the same anyway!! It does seem to be an oversight on Pioneers behalf. Unless theres a setting I'm missing somewhere.
I think the general target user base for the SP-16 is likely to use a lot of sample packs so it may not of ever been noticed in development.
I mean that's great for you, you may not need it but others like myself find it crucial so please try to think outside yourself and maybe lookout for your fellow mates as well eh? It certainly doesn't hurt to be able to specify the exact bpm and I feel it would help the sampler workload as well if we can just set it from the get go instead of relying on the toraiz's hit or miss bpm detection.
^Please read what I wrote again, maybe this time a little more carefully. Firstly I offered some help to find a parameter you may of missed which could of helped your issue (a parameter that pertains to do exactly what you wanted that you made no mention of). Then I pointed out there was an apparent shortcoming of said parameter and suggested that Pioneer may of dropped the ball. At no point did I suggest that Pioneer needn't fix this because it wasn't something I would use. I would in fact like them to fix it as I may well need it in the future. As it stands I tend to record stuff straight into the SP-16 for each project, however, I'm sure at some point I would want to load a sample form another project and use it at X BPM. I stated my lack of use of the parameter because I haven't spent any time looking at it so my statement that it wasn't working correctly should be taken with a pinch of salt or confirmed by someone that does use the parameter more often and therefore has a better working knowledge of it. Its fairly key that a loop oriented sampler with timestretch should have a BPM/Bar adjustment, wether you use it or not eh!
I've made several suggestions about features I'd like along with a few other constructive people on here. I am very keen that the SP-16 is developed, its got great potential to be a really nice piece of gear.
I would add MIDI access to slices too. Not being able to play slices via MIDI makes the SP-16 much less convenient as part of a MIDI-centered studio.
+1, especially on zero cross-point loops to eliminate clicks and sample slice playback feature requests.
+1,000,000 on James Womack's slice playback via MIDI request. I use a Squarp Pyramid as a sequencer and I would love for slices to be mapped across MIDI note numbers in much the same way as Simpler in Ableton maps from C1 when slicing a sample, so that it allows any MIDI note input to trigger slices. This would truly enhance the SP-16 for producers!
Ooh yeah... I just posted slice via midi request in another post!!... but I'll add my own +1,000,000 for this feature... the options available then would be... insane!...
