Auto Gain - confused

When using Virtual DJ, Auto Gain 'normalised' all of your tracks to a particular level, so that you didn't end up with quiet/loud tracks - no messing with gain for each one.  It then stored the gain setting in the database

Now using Rekordbox I can't seem to get this to work?  I've enabled AutoGain in the settings, but whilst trying out at a small gig last night I still had to manually adjust the trim on the RX2 for each song to match the volume levels.  Am I missing something?

The auto-gain setting tries to guesstimate the best setting, but you can also manually adjust the setting for each track:

I see. Should the trim on the RX2 adjust the auto gain or just the gain itself? If you adjust the autogain manually Di's rekordbox remember it? Audio, if I want to reset the autogain do I just reanalyse the files?

The trim adjusts the gain, not the autogain, and unfortunately you can't map the autogain adjustment to the gain knob. For digital only use it'd make far more sense for the trim control to adjust the autogain setting then you only have to do it once for each track. Trying to adjust the autogain using the mouse in the grid edit area when you actually play a track live is a pain, and going through a whole library ensuring the gain levels are correct isn't practical when you have a large library and do gigs where you take requests constantly

I really like Rekordbox DJ. The auto-gain is bad though. With other DJ software, I barely have to adjust the trims (occasional bumps here or there) but with RB DJ, you can barely hear soft parts of a song intro for example. I have to constantly adjust each track by a pretty large margin (and these are all tracks that I ran through Platinum Notes, so the levels are pretty close) and they work great on other software. I wish Rekordbox was better (unless it's a DDJ-RX issue and not software)? Not sure... I messed around with beta 5.1 and the new auto-mix feature is pretty rough too. It's cool they are trying to implement it, but it's not ready for prime time.

@Mike > Did you use the auto-gain adjustment (pictured above) to tweak those tracks that were too low?

Pulse, the problem is bigger than that. It's not individual tracks, it's parts of tracks. A couple of good examples are Bruno Mars - 24K Magic and Justin Timberlake - Can't Stop The Feeling. At the beginning of both of those songs, I have to crank the gains (trims) up to about 2 or 3 o'clock, just to be able to hear the intros. Then, when the beat kicks in, I have to quickly take them back down to about 10 o'clock. I know I can cue in (and I often do) but I can run these same tracks with other software and leave the gains alone and you can still hear the other parts of the track. This was with a DDJ-RX (if that makes a difference). I tried adjusting the headroom level, the auto-cue level (not sure what that is) but nothing seems to change what is happening. I'd love to figure this out because Rekordbox DJ features are great and it's an impressive piece of software.

@Mike > A track with wide dynamic range will be quieter in certain parts; the auto-gain is supposed to optimize the track gain so that the peak levels of the track are near the 0dB mark. It sounds to me more like you're asking for normalization - evening out the highs and lows of a track.

Pulse, I appreciate the response. My tracks area actually normalized via Platinum Notes. I understand what you are saying, that there are quieter parts to certain tracks. My "issue" is that with Serato, for example, I can leave my gains alone well over 90% of the time, but with Rekordbox DJ, the quieter parts are SO quiet, they are almost inaudible! The amount of adjustment I have to make is extreme just to hear the softer parts of the tracks... It's quite frustrating.

If you've already normalized them, they shouldn't have that variation. Can you take a non-PN'd track dump it into rekordbox, allow it to build a waveform and screenshot that, then take a copy of the track, run it through PN, analyse in rekordbox and screenshot as a comparison?

If anything, I see that the overall levels are LOWER on the PN'd version... that would either mean that it's simply compressed the track, or it's reduced the dynamic range to make a narrower difference between the quieter portions and the louder ones.

I had the owner send me a copy of PN to test as well, so I'll let you know what I find.

Okay, so I tested just a couple of tracks, but here's what I found...

Using the default PN settings, thanks to most modern producers feeling they need to push their mastering to make songs look like a brick, PN will lower the amplitude to an average volume of -12.5dB. You can see in this test that it decreased the volume by 5dB, which I matched in audio comparison in Ableton Live 9.

It seems it didn't really decrease the dynamic range (with the default settings), the quiet passage is also around 5dB quieter than the loud passages.

Have you tried adjusting the auto-gain setting so the loudest parts of the track are peaking around +1dB of the meters (first orange LED on the hardware)?

With Platinum Notes, I disable the compression settings and the "add warmth". I only use it to normalize. All I know is I can use these files with Serato, OtsAV, Virtual DJ, in my car, on my phone, etc... and the quiet parts aren't anywhere near as quiet as they are in Rekordbox DJ :(

And this is why I'm trying to ascertain where you have the auto-gain settings, and if you have adjusted them.

You have to enable Auto Gain in the preferences before you can adjust the knob on the grid-edit page for each track:

Two ways... enable the Bitdepth column to show it in the collection window:

Or select the track in question and open the Info panel:

The AUTO GAIN knob allows you to fine-tune tracks which are not being gained properly with the automatic setting.

Do you know if there are any plans to make auto-gain mappable?  At the minute it's not usable in a live setting without using the mouse

Just use the gain / trim on your controller to compensate.

I noticed the Auto gain that I adjust on the playlist on my laptop get saved.  But when I adjust the songs directly from the USB when connected to the laptop the Auto gain that I manually adjusted will reset to 0.  Is there any way to permanently save it to the USB so I don't have to keep adjusting it so much,  like the way it gets saved in the playlist directly in the laptop.  Or better yet adjust them in the laptop and when I sync it gets transferred to the USB.  I dont mind tweaking them so it is closer to where i need it to be but why can't it save it like it does on the laptop.

Auto gain data is not stored on the export as there are no devices which support it. Sorry!
