[CHAT] Cueing Both Tracks in Headphones ... Right or Wrong

Now, I've been DJing years, and was speaking to a mate of mine who's been in the game years too. We was talking about how each of us mix, but he was basically calling me a cheat.

I do what I believe a lot of DJ's do. I cue both tracks (I use a DJM 600), and use both ears with both tracks playing. I only use this whilst beat matching, and so that I can pre set the EQ's incase both are bass heavy etc. Personally for me I find I can get a much tighter mix this way.

Now, he was saying this is cheating. He's been a DJ much longer than me, but says that I should be using one ear, and only the 1 track cued and use the monitors to hear the other track. Yeah I can do this, but I can get more precise mixes doing it the other way.

I made a point to argue that most so called DJs these days rely on Traktor and auto beat matching. So his argument isn't even a valid one.

What's with people calling it cheating? I've heard others say it in the past.

That's not cheating, use sync is cheating. I do the same when i beat match, cue the master and the "of air channel". It's to much noise in the club and the sound quality is crap from the main PA when you stand behind it and all clubs don't have booth monitors.

Some time when i play lounge, the main speakers use to be far away from the booth and playing on low volume so i wear the headphones all time.

@GV1 > Thats bizarre. What does your friend do when their are no monitors and the only speakers are pointing away from him (creating a sound delay)? Do whatever works for you. Personally, I'm also a fan of mixing in my headphones.

Cheating? How? Because you're doing it your way and it works for you?

I mix almost exclusively in my headphones, I learned that way because I'd often mix at night and didn't want to disturb the family or my neighbours.
