Best possible set-up.... S-DJ05

I need some suggestions to maximise my set up.

I have S-DJ05's currently connected to my mixer via XLR but I want to swap this connection to the input of an audio interface for the best recording quality.

This leaves me with no playback to the speakers direct from the mixer or from my computer so I was looking to utilise the TRS on the back of the 05's.

Is it best for me to use a TRS - TRS cable direct from the sound card output to the back of the units to get sound from the computer?

And how would I then use any of the other inputs on the back of the 05's to avoid swapping over cables?

Any advice would be appreciated as this is new to me and I'm currently stuck in obsessive mode ;)

Thanks

Interface has 2in / 4out options

What mixer do you have?  If you have a newer mixer with a soundcard (850, 900, 2000 etc) then you can record directly from that via USB to your computer and leave your SDJ-05's as they are.

Or, if you have a Booth output on the mixer (usually TRS), you could use that to output to your speakers and take whatever output you need from the mixer to your computer for recording.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick response. I have a mixture of non Pioneer equipment at the moment and I'm saving towards an 850 with the built in sound card.

I only have the monitors and I'm really impressed with them

I think I will have to put the XLR to the interface and then use Master Out RCA from the mixer to the TRS in the 05's judging by your reply?

I hope to have the money in 6 months for the 850; I can't wait.

Did I pick you up right?

Just thinking, then that means I don't get the enhanced audio quality from the interface if I connect the speakers directly from my mixer using the master out to TRS?

In that case just use XLR to your soundcard interface like you said and then just use the RCA master out from your mixer to the RCA input on the SDJ's.

I don't understand what you mean by "get the enhanced audio quality from the interface"?

If I use the RCA connection to the SDJ's this is only using a direct signal from the mixer to the speakers as it does not come into contact with the interface which I believe in turn enhances the sound that would come out of the speakers. This is the reason why I was wondering if I used one of the TRS outputs on the sound card to the TRS on the back of the speakers that I would maybe be able to use this input to get  the enhanced audio quality through the speakers and not just while recording.

Ok, I'm assuming that you want to run your audio from the mixer through your computer to "enhance" the sound?  I can't really help here - it's all about personal preference.  The way I see it, the audio that leaves the mixer is the perfect audio that you need to record.  Any 'processing' should be done after you've made the recording.

Hey Mark,

Just wanted to say thanks for taking the time.

I'm new to all this; I'm obviously missing something and i'm confused about what an audio interface does.

I was under the impression that the interface converted the analogue signal to an 'enhanced quality' or rather a 'true' quality or even an enhanced quality in comparison to an inferior interface such as an in built soundcard on a Mac.

If I then have this 'true' quality on my Macbook do all I need for 'true' playback is to play this new file from my my computer connecting one of the RCA outputs on the back of the SDJ's to the TRS 1/4 on the interface as there are no RCA connections.

@Brian > Use the XLR from the mixer to the speakers.  Use TRS from the soundcard to the speakers.  Use RCAs (or TRS, depending on what the soundcard inputs are) from the mixer to the soundcard.
