[SOLVED] RMX1000 - connecting to a A&H DB4

HI all

Can anyone give me a relatively easy way to use a RMX1000 with a DB4 mixer ? I know the effects on the DB4 are plentiful however I'm thinking of giving a RMX1000 a go but the mixer doesn't have a send / return.

Any ideas ?

Thanks in advance

Unfortunately you're correct in that the mixer has no S/R or AUX loops.  You'll have to either connect the RMX between a device and the mixer (if using a line-level device such as a CDJ) or post-master, running the outputs from the mixer to the RMX then out to your speakers or computer or whatever.

Hi Pulse, thanks for the reply. If I could pick your brains a little more .... so instead of my existing booth out connection to my speakers I connect the TRS to the RMX then output everything via the RMX1000 ?

Would that mean the effects on the DB4 would no longer work or would the RMX be able to carry the signal ?

forgive my lack of comprehension on all this techy stuff !

Ahhh just googled and seen the other post similar to my query, so the limitation of post master is recording a set because the RMX won't be picked up.

I want to be able to use the RMX / DB4 for effects and record into Logic via the DB4 sound card as I do currently - is this not possible ?

So I think I'm learning more, so I think I understand post master, next question using this method, can you connect two outputs - 1. to the speakers (TRS) and 2 to a portable recording device ? I can then upload that into Logic and do my mastering. If the DB4 can still be used for filters and effects two then this will work just great !!

Pulse - can you confirm or am I wrong !!

@Paulm72 > You could connect it up as so...

Option 1) Master outputs on the DB4 to the RMX to the speakers + RCA record output from DB4 to recording device

Option 2) CDJ connected to RMX connected to DB4 connected to speakers + RCA record output from DB4 to recording device.

Thanks Gavin with option 1,won't the effects being used on the rmx1000 not be picked up when recording from the db4 ?

@Paulm72 > Yes, you are absolutely correct. At least one of our brains is functioning correctly tonight.

But with option 2 you can only apply the effect to one channel... Something to think about...

There is a bit of a workaround involving using the master booth output and configuring it to send cued channels.. Then returning thru the mic inputs.

U need to really understand signal routing etc as it can give nasty feedbcks if not setup right.

I posted something on the djtechtools board if u want to see specifics.. Theres two methods..

Hi Kevin, I saw that post and being honest I don't think I did it correctly it didn't seem to work and as you say I was worried about causing feedback issues. I raised a trouble ticket with A&H for a solution who are coming back to me.

Basically all I'm looking for is to be able to use the RMX within my set up and be able to record out of the mixer capturing the effects I put in using the DB4 and RMX

if you just want to apply the FX to the master - then just hook ur master output to the rmx - thats easy and u shouldnt have much issue there..

but if u want to apply the rmx fx to only 1 channel at a time on the xone then ud have to use the workarounds.. which quite franctly are not all that easy to apply properly (+ u lose certain cue'ing flexibility, etc).

If u want to use the workarounds, tell me a lil more about what u tried + what the issues were + ill try to help..

unfortunately, it will never quite be as easy as a Send/Return (I am surprised A+H didnt put a S/R on the db4 mixer)..

Hi Kevin,

After speaking to Allen and Heath I set the RMX up from the REC out and back into Channel 4 of the mixer and then set it pre fade so it could be recorded into Logic - but I'm not enamoured by the results and of course I can't apply the effects per channel. I read somewhere else that someone connected the RMX via the record out & back into analogue channel 4 then selected within the record menu on the DB4 headphones. Then by selecting the cue of the channel you wish to effect voila. I've not tested this yet but my reservation is how do I still record the output into Logic ?

Wish the DB4 had send / return !!!

@Paul72

It looks like I will be buying the DB4. I also have an RMX 1000. How do you find the RMX 1000 compared to the DB4s sound effects?

I wasn't sure if I would use the RMX 1000 after seeing what the DB4 can do...

Hi Leee,

Honestly they're not comparable - the DB4's effects are more subtle and less harsh than the RMX. I'm not sure how you would be able to perform many of the same effects on the DB4 - it would involve using the input matrix and applying multiple effects to get a similar outcome. I'd say the RMX does more work for you but it's harsh and using the DB4 is not ideal as it doesn't have a send / return

BUT the DB4 is a fantastic mixer and I can't wait for the new firmare that's coming out v soon !!!

what mixer do you have currently ?

Thanks for that Paul.

I have a DJM 2000. I agree that the RMX effects (and DJM 2000) are harsh. I have watched a few video on the DB4 and was really surprised how nice the effects sounded.

I do like to use the drum machine section on the RMX 1000 though.

Does the RMX sync the BPM in time when running through the DB4?

The effects are great on the DB4 but nothing like as wild as the RMX. I like both for different reasons. I had the DJM2000 myself before the DB4 and was very happy with the change BUT I just wish the DB4 could configure better with the RMX1000 - you'd imss the send / return

Yea - the send/return seems to be the only problem for me.

I see that it has been requested for a future firmware update on the Xone forum. I'm not sure if it is possible - would be great if it could be done.

Nice video mate thanks for taking time out to record it

Your workaround is great as I've used it but the only issue I found is you can't use the sound card to record your mixes thereafter because of record set up as it will only capture the cued signal.

Truth be known I sacked it off in the end and got a DJM900 to integrate the RMX properly.
