Strange problem with my playing mp3's on my 2 CDJ-2000?

When i play  some of my mp3's (320kbs) on my 2 CDJ-2000, then i hear some little ticks in de song. Just like ticks in a old vinyl record.

I try to play this mp3's via usb stick and Rekordbox link, also tesame problem.

But, when i play tesame mp3's on my MEP-7000, then they play perfect without any ticks.

Also when i play this mp3's on my pc or mp player, no problem.

I try to rip this mp3's with 2 other prgrams and i try also VBR, also tesame problems only with CDJ-2000.

When i rip this songs to wav, then CDJ-2000 play it perfect.

Why doesn't play the CDJ-2000 some mp3's perfect and other players have no problem with this mp3's???

I run this mp3's also with mp3val, but everything ok.

@Marc > What version firmware are you running on the players and what is the source of the files (flash drive, hard drive, SD card)?

Is Master Tempo on, and are the tracks pitched up or down a lot?  Is it possible for you to record a short sample for us to hear?

@Pulse: Firmware version of my 2 CDJ-2000's is v.4.04. The source is Usb Flash Drive and i have also tesame problem with mp3's on my laptop linked to CDJ-2000 with rekordbox.

@Mark90: I'm gonna try to record tomorrow a sample, then you can hear my problem. The ticks are good to hear via headphone. The mp3's are original ripped from CD with different programs. The problem is not with all mp3's. When i rip to wav, then cdj-2000 play it without any problem.

It is very strange, because this "problem" mp3 files plays perfect on my MEP-7000 and all other mp3 players. Then i don't hear any ticks.

(Sorry my english is not so very good)

I have also noticed this problem on a few tracks as well. The tracks are also mp3's 320kbs that I have purchased from Beatport. I can play them through rekordbox on my mac and they sound fine, but through the USB on my 2 cdj2000's there is a clicking sound which occurs within a few places on the track. This clicking only occurs on the cdj2000 with the track going from the USB stick. I have played the track from a cd on the cdj's aswell and this clicking doesn't occur. I have also played these tracks on itunes etc and they all don't have this clicking problem, only the USB on my cdj2000's. The master tempo is not on on the cdj 2000's and they aren't pitched up or down. I am using version 4.04 firmware. My tracks are from beatport and then they go on iTunes and to rekordbox and then my USB stick. I have tried 3 different USB sticks with the couple of tracks I have noticed this on and they all show up this clicking noise.

@Plasticman: Yes, it's the same problem like me. I think the problem is started with firmware version 4.04. Because before, i never here this ticks in my songs. I have my CDJ-2000's from June 2010 and use the players every weekend. The ticks are not very loud, but when i listen with my headphone, i hear it very good. I'm gonna make tomorow a audio sample of the problem.

Very strange  problem with the ticks in your music.. I don't believe I had it with the current FW

Yes, it's very strange. And tesame mp3's plays perfect (without ticks) on my MEP-7000 or any other mp3 player.

Most of my mp3's plays perfect on my CDJ-2000, but some have this ticks on CDJ-2000.

I have this problem also (320 kbps, on memory stick),  i'll post about it in a short time. I recorded the outputs of the cdj2000 into my cubase. I will also post the picture with the waveform, u will be able to see the dip responsible for the crackles and pops.

Make sure u don't miss the post and share your  opinion

Thanks for info MarianEugen.

I think it is a problem with CDJ-2000. I hope that pioneer can fix it with a new firmware?

I noticed this problem while i was using firmware 4.0 . Now i'm using 4.01 and is the same.

Please try this :

1 -  right after u hear the strange noise grab the platter and spin backwards just a few seconds before the x position. Release the platter and let it play, now u won't hear the strange noise again .

Am i right ?

2 - right after u hear the strange noise grab the platter and spin backwards much longer (1 minute), better use the needle search. Release the platter and let it play. Now u will hear the strange sound again, at the same position.

Am i right ?

Yes, You are right!!!

I have try it out, when i spin backwards after the ticks and i release the platter again, then i don't hear the ticks. Very strange.

At first i thought it happens because of an corrupt mp3 file, but now i don't think this anymore.

 - First step:  i imported the mp3 file in cubase and exported as a wav file.  Now i don't hear any pops or crackles whilst the cdj 2000 is playing the wav file.

  • Step 2 : now i took this wav file and imported in cubase, then exported as 320 kbps mp3 and played in cdj2000's  . Now the pops appear again .

With both sdj 2000 player is happening the same, at the same position.

I do not hear that pops while i am playing that mp3 file on rekordbox or any other program.

I think is a cdj2000 problem

@ Plasticman - i consider those ticks loud enough to disturb

@MarianEugen: Yes, it's really tesame problem.

When i make a wav file, then this wav file plays perfect on CDJ-2000. But, when i make a MP3 file of tesame song, then i hear ticks when i play mp3 file on CDJ-2000.

I have this problems on my both CDJ-2000's. But, some mp3's plays perfect on my CDJ-2000.

hello mate, yeah as stated above I have only had these decks for a week. I took the track into the shop where I got the decks from with my USB stick and played it on there cdj2000 and the ticks/pops occurred on there cdj2000. They put it onto there mac book into iTunes and no problems with the track. They took a copy of it and told me to send them an email with the problems I have with both my cdj's which is this and the MT drifting and they would pass it onto someone in Pioneer. About 2 hours later I had a call from an engineer at Pioneer who wanted the track, I told him the shop I got the decks from had the track as well and he said he would get it from them, that was Thursday and I aint heard anything more from them. I will try and call him next week and see what is happening. This tick problem occurs on some of my tracks and only on the cdj's and not in rekordbox. To tell the truth I think I will take them back to the shop and get my money back :-( cos I don't enjoy mixing on them with this and the drifting problems.

Now, i rip my cd's to wav.

But i hope that Pioneer fix this mp3 problem. Because, i payed a lot of money for my CDJ-2000 and they must play without problems.

Here is the description of the picture :

A -  this wave form represents the original mp3 file imported in cubase (320 kbps mp3)

B - this wave form represents the cdj2000 output , playing the mp3 file (first time)

C - this wave form represents the cdj2000 output, playing  the mp3 file (played the 2nd time) - it happens in the same spot

D - this wave form represents the cdj2000 output, playing the mp3 file ( ON THE OTHER CD PLAYER)

E - this wave form represents the cdj2000 output, playing the same track after converting it to wav , (so the cd player is playing a wav file now)

E comments : the conversion history of the file played : original mp3 - > wav

F - this wave form represents the cdj2000 output, playing the previous wav file (point E) after converting it back to mp3 - it happens a lil further (the cd player is playing a mp3 file now)

    F comments : the conversion history of the file played : original mp3 -> wav -> mp3

@ Pulse or other Pioneer specialist

I also have the 6 audio files, just tell me if u want me to send them at your e-amil adress.

The engineers are investigating this issue and are trying to determine the source of the issue.

@Marian > I will email you to get that info.

I also have this very same issue, and i agree with Marian that it has been about since firmware 4.0, i played about with converting from mp3 to wav and noticed the issue vanish so  i just converted the tracks that were showing this issue to wav's.

I'm glad that this is now being worked on by the engineers/techies as this is a major draw back !.

Side note: Just out of curiosty i have noticed that mp3's from beatport can have a db level in excess of up to 98db, wont this in effect cause clipping of the audio file ?

And i have always wondered if pioneer has a prefered mp3 encoder to make mp3's ?, as there are quite a few mp3 encoders out there to choose from, and do they advise beatport / juno etc of what encoder to use when creating mp3's ?, this information should be made available so that mp3 creation is standardized across the industry for mp3's being used by Dj's.

I love wavs but i don't have an endless supply of cash !

It is very strange.

Because, i rip my whole CD collection to mp3 (CBR 320kbs) with tesame program and some mp3's have this ticks when i play it on CDJ-2000 and some mp3's play perfect on CDJ-2000.

I hope that pioneer fix it in the next firmware.

Sorry for the late reply - files were received and passed to the engineers.  They've identified the root cause but are now working on a fix to make sure it doesn't affect anything else or cause any other errors.
