[SOLVED] Remote box or Rekordbox for XDJ-R1

I know this question has been asked over the years with no joy, so I will ask again. Are there any plans or signs of Remotebox or Rekordbox coming to Android for the XDJ-R1? Even a simple version which allows browsing of USB drives on the R1. Its a challenge to browse files on the screens that are available on the R1. Any info will be helpful.

rekordbox is available for the Android, but rekordbox is not compatible with the R1, and there are no plans to make remotebox for Android. Sorry!

Are there plans to upgrade Rekordbox for Android to support the R1?

I thought it did already? Have you updated to the latest version?

How about the RX? and How can I share/sync databases between devices?

@Adam > Yes, you can export to multiple devices or drives. In order to "sync" between them, you would update the collection any time you reconnect it to the parent rekordbox database, then other devices can be updated as well.

So where does the master database need to be (parent rekordbox database)? I moved it from my laptop to the USB drive my music is on, thinking it needed to be there for the XDJ-RX to read the database (this was done to try and figure out why the XDJ-RX wasn't reading my ID3 Tags in Atlantic City at the DJ Times Expo, when I was demoing the unit to see if it was worth my investment). To me, each drive or device should have it's own database. But if I can actually sync databases, playlists, etc. I really like this feature. Would like to know how to do it properly, though!

@Adam > Ah, see, the controllers and CDJs don't read the master database, they read an export database. rekordbox works as such:

  • you import your music into the rekordbox collection, it analyses and prepares your music
  • you export your music (some or all of it) to external devices; USB thumb drives, hard drives, or SD cards
  • you use the export device to play on a CDJ or XDJ unit

Where there is some confusion:

  • you CAN have your music source on an external device, and the database can also live on that drive, but you MUST export to have music accessible by a CDJ / XDJ
  • you CAN export to the same drive as the source (if the source is external) but it will require additional space for any amount of music you export; if you export your entire collection, you will double the used space on that drive

Thank you for the explanation. Two different databases. I get it now, but who the hell came up with this architecture? It makes no sense to duplicate the collection or music files. The database should live where the music is and the software/hardware should read the database, attached to the files - no matter what the device (laptop, desktop, XDJ-RX, etc.). OK, end rant. I'm sure I'll elaborate more on this, especially as I learn this new "over-complicated" structure. Question: is it possible to have two master databases on different devices, and sync them over a network or with the exported database on a USB drive?

Believe me when I say that was my question from day one. Why it's not like Serato where the database lives with the files, I'll never know, but as far as I know, it won't change because that would be a ground-up event.

Yes, you can have multiple master databases on different devices! There may even be a way to have multiples on the same device, but I don't want to throw that one to the sharks just yet. ;)

Within rekordbox, go to the preferences and under the Advanced icon, you'll find the database management, where you can move the database to an external drive. I do this so I can take my drive (where my music lives) from computer to computer and always have my rekordbox database with me. If you don't have that drive connected, you can load another (whether internal or off another external drive).

Awesome! I appreciate your response. Perhaps Pioneer should re-think this thing from the ground-up before it gets to a point where they're going to have to do it anyway. Hire one of the old Denon guys! They had the perfect architecture for a standalone unit, but abandoned it to partner up with Serato and Traktor (BTW, they're coming out with a new standalone platform in 2016!). Pioneer has always made the best hardware, but I wish they'd listen to what we mobiles need to be the true leader (Pioneer!) in this space. I have moved my master database to my USB drive. So when it's hooked into my PC, sync it up. When it's hooked up to my laptop, sync it up. Now all 3 databases are synced up? (You're right, multiple databases on one drive can get tricky!)

Hahaha ... oh wait, you're serious?

It doesn't "Sync" - what happens is the software loads that database (provided you have set that as your default within rekordbox) and the associated music collection. There is no syncing required.

So if I add files to the drive, analyze them with rekordbox on my pc, export them to my usb drive...now can be used by the XDJ-RX, but it will be the same on my laptop - all because the master database is on my usb key. No need to sync as long as I've followed these steps. Right? I think I get it. So multiple devices, floating collection, floating database. But only if the master database sits on that USB drive, and not on any other devices (pc, laptop, etc.).

Correct! There's no need to sync because the database and all the music are portable -- the only thing is that database is (unfortunately) not read by the player, only rekordbox, thus the need for an export.

The XDJ-RX doesn't read or access the main database, but the exported version of the database. That is weird. Why not make it more uniform, universal...this would alleviate some issues. But thank you for the heads up. It makes sense now!

Pulse-->I thought it did already? Have you updated to the latest version?

I have version 1.3.2 installed on my Android device and it only supports the RX, Aero and XDJ 1000 not the XDJ R1
