32 Second Sample Limit

(32 second sample limit) - I had a discussion with someone who thought the sample time limit was no big deal if you understood how to utilize the arrangement features on the SP-16. We were discussing full length backing tracks as our project example. The 32 second sample limit requires a full length backing track to be chopped up into pieces and then reassembled onto tracks. I said that was an extreme mess of a workflow requirement but I suppose it was do-able. What I didn't realize at the time was how many sample tracks would be necessary to assemble a full length song. So, I decided to find out for myself. I used Frankie Goes to Hollywood "Relax" as my test song. I broke each section of the song down into clips - intro, verse, chorus, bridge, etc. The golden question is how many sample clips did I need to assemble the full song? For this song, it was 12. I was shocked! Remember, sometimes you can not re-use a previous verse or chorus sample because there is new material added. I also found that the second chorus was 34 seconds long which meant that it had to be split into 2 samples! Geez. Food for thought.

Hello @clay

Thanks for the feedback and the great idea about splitting up the song into 32 sec samples.

We've had a large amount of request for the SP-16 to play longer files and we have forwarded that information to the engineers. Right now we don't have an answer whether that will be possible in future firmware updates.

on the link below you can see a firmware update map with whats being added/changed on upcoming updates.

Yes it needs reviewing i think. Whilst i get that it might not be possible for the unit to handle 16 full length tracks all being time stretched & played together, it would be good if Pioneer allowed at least one (four would be better for Stem playback) track per pattern to be a full length track, maybe exported from Rekordbox to keep correct time over Pro DJ link.

I will have our Toraiz guy look at this.  Any suggestions made will be directed to the engineers for review and future firmware updating if possible so keep thoughts coming.

Thank you Jay. I like what Phil suggested and I think it is a reasonable middle ground request to look into. Nobody wants to ask for the world and then end up with nothing. I'd love to see at least 1 track capable of full length sample playback even if we have to give up the time stretch feature.

Thanks again for listening.

@jay that would be cool if the engineers can work something out. I'd suggest looking at 'one-shot trigs' on the octatrack for the kind of thing that might be feasible for a possible solution. And like mentioned above, even if it isn't possible to timestrech samples over 32 seconds, it would at least be useful for anyone wishing to play a 'backing track' on their toraiz. Obviously in this scenario the backing track would need to keep playing til it's end, even if you switch scenes/patterns etc.
