XDJ RX freezing issues

I am having a similar problem with the xdj rx as others. It seams there is no solution for this problem yet. I am very concerned that there is no reasonable answer for this problem yet and that buyers of the unit are the ones at fault. is there no customer service here? Or am I just reading a bunch of ignorant peoples posts and I am undoubtably one of them? Here is my issue below.

The unit freezes up every time i play a non rekordbox analyzed track.  To me this is unacceptable and should be an easy fix. There are tons of people with the same problem and there has been really no solution provided by pioneer yet. only "reformat your usb device" or try to fix the songs with a third party software. To me this is ludicrous. What a bunch of bull. How can you release a product and then not back it up when it has MAJOR issues. I have read so many peoples posts with this same issue and there was no fix and really no help. I am outraged at this. It is like what Apple did to its billions of Iphone users with their updates and left so many customers with a major issue and no fix. telling them "TO BAD". maybe you all should back up the problems and fix them or offer a solution to get the money back for the purchase of something that doesnt work. There are no excuses for the lack of responsibility this company has provided their customers and there should be something done about it. at least pull the product from the shelves until you have figured out how to make it work properly. I feel I have wasted my money on this piece of junk. Lets see if you have a good response. I have updated all of my firmware and it still has the same issue. I have no problem playing these songs on any other device other than this xdj rx. I thought this would be a massive step in the right direction but now I realize I am being screwed over by the one company I trust in the industry. Get back to me about this. I hope i am behind and just very illiterate when looking up issues being fixed online. and hoping there is a fix that I havnt seen yet.

Sorry to hear this, some users have found that reformatting their USB drives and analyzing their tracks in Rekordbox has fixed this concern.  If you have done both of these things I will be happy to create a ticket from this post and send it directly to the engineers to follow up with you.  Pioneer wants nothing more than to have their gear work well and support the DJs who use it.

I'd also point to questionable USB drives as the potential source of the problem, even if they work fine in other devices.

Yeah I am having a major issue with this and am not happy. My XDJ-RX will freeze for several minutes when loading certain tracks. I know for a fact this is not a USB drive issue, as I use reformatted USB sticks with all your CDJ models in clubs everywhere and have never had an issue. With this XDJ-RX it happens all the time and is really causing me major anxiety and issues when using it at a gig. These are also tracks I've loaded onto CDJs and never had a problem either.

I also purchased a SECOND XDJ-RX for a party crew I work with. It was updated with the new firmware, yet last saturday while using it, I loaded a track, it froze, and then all audio stopped. This happened twice, and I had to restart the unit, which is obviously unacceptable in a live situation! I am now wondering hat to do as I cannot continue with either of these units. There must be something you can do about this, otherwise I will have to file an insurance claim to try to get my money back...

@David > Per my last reply above; it could well be the USB drive as CDJs and the XDJ-RX and not the same. What is the make/model of drives you were using when the problem occurred?

Are you able to repeat the freeze with that same track?

Which firmware version is on the RX?

@Pulse I'm using SanDisk Ultra Fit 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive (SDCZ43-128G-GAM46) [Newest Version], and SanDisk Ultra USB 3.0 Flash Drive (SDCZ48-256G-U46).

I don't know what the track was that froze it but it wasn't the same track the other times. I use either 320 bit rate mp3s or WAVs. Again-have never had a problem with these USBs on any of your other models of CDJ-and I play weekly at different clubs in NYC with varying models and firmware.

Have to double check firmware on the first RX, but the second one which totally froze and had to be restarted has the most recent firmware (2.20)

Unfortunately I wouldn't describe either of those drives as "performance" units - the only SanDisk I've never seen any complaints about are the Extreme Pro models. Are you able to test another brand of USB drive with the same collection of music?

Let me get this straight. You're saying that my USB sticks, which work FINE with all your other Pioneer products-literally have used them on CDJ 850, 900, 2000, 2000nexus, 2000nxsII, XDJ 1000, with ZERO problems-you're telling me that it's the USB sticks that are the problem here?? Sorry but that sounds like a terrible excuse for crap software on the XDJ-RX. I am constantly having issues with both these units, and I am using these USB sticks every weekend on other Pioneer CDJ models. This is an issue with your product, and I'd like to get some real help here please.

I want to speak with your supervisor or someone who can actually help me.

@David > Many of our products have different hardware on the insides, for the most part, the CDJs are pretty similar, but the XDJs have a different USB host chipset. One of the nuances of that host is we've found users complaining that certain USB drives were incompatible (for example, Corsair Survivor series drives which work perfectly in CDJs are not recognized by XDJs).

You're speaking with someone who can ACTUALLY help you, and I'd like to help you but it will require some action on your side. All I'm asking is if you have the ability to test with another make / model of USB drive to eliminate that as the possible source of the problem here.

Hi Pulse,

I'm having similar AND other issues with my XDJ-RX. There are a number of things so I didn't really know where to post this, but here goes.

My tracks have all been analyzed with RB and most of them have pre-made loops under hotcues A, B and/or C.

Besides completely freezing which mine has done a couple of times too, the unit has a variety of other issues that occur:

- Off beat echo-effect. I use the echo a lot and find that often (about half the time) the echo is not on beat. This is easily fixed by resetting the echo right before using it, but it's still very anoying.

- The brake-function is not always working. I always have the touch/release button just over the middle so that when I hit 'pause' it doesn't stop abruptly but rather like a turntable would stop. However, this only works about 80% of the time...

- I've had times where I would call a loop by hitting the hotcue button under which it was stored, and the unit would have to think for a second producing no audio en would then continue.

- Sometimes when in a loop, I use the hotcue to return to the '1' while at the same time using the jog-wheel to scratch the beat that is on that '1'. The unit then stutters when the loop goes back and forth over the in/out-point.

There were some other minor things that don't come to mind right now, but all in all it appears to me as if the XDJ-RX is just not capable of doing the calculations fast enough when it's tested beyond just mixing a few tracks together. I've also noticed for example that problems occur more often when recording.

I've sent the unit back to my reseller twice now and their Pioneer repair-guy keeps telling them that "they can't reproduce the problem". However, I doubt that he tests the machine like I do and besides I have the unit freezing on video and some of the other problems too so why should this matter? Also contradictary to that statement is that they HAVE replaced the motherboard the last time. Or at least, that's the story because only a half hour after it came back, the same problems occured.

The reseller has now decided to give me a refirbished model, for which I am grateful but really I doubt I will not have the same problems on this one after a while. Just to be clear, I've used all kids of USB-drives and I've even done some research on which ones are the fastest and which are the most compatible with Pioneer products and I have found that problems occur with all of them.

Hey Pulse,

Here are video's of some of the issues I've had with my (now previous) XDJ:

1. Complete freeze:

2. Unable to make a Cuepoint:

3. While in a loop, playing bits of a completely different song which isn't even loaded:

@Sasha > Which firmware is installed on that RX in the videos? I noticed the datestamp in the filename of the first video was back in April.

The issue in the 3rd video could be from a bad USB drive or damaged files; reformatting and re-exporting may resolve that problem.

The firmware in the video is the latest. I know this because from the emails between me and the reseller I can see that I first sent the XDJ back in march. I remember them asking before sending it to them (as any reseller would) to update the firmware.

And yes, the issue in the third video could be from a bad USB drive or damaged file, but it's not. I've tried all sorts of USB-drives and problems occur with all of them. Other people have had problems using my XDJ with their own USB drives and their own files. Also, I might have an issue with playing a certain file and then have it working fine the next time, so it doesn't seem to be a corrupted file issue either.

I love the XDJ. It's the perfect combination of all the features of CDJ's and DJM all put into one machine. But when tested to the limit, it just doesn't hold up ALL of the time.. and that makes it unreliable. Online I've found that many people have very similar issues and all pioneer ever says is that bad USB drives or corrupted files are to blame... which to me is starting to sound more like a bad excuse I'm sorry to say.

Honestly, poor-quality USB drives and audio files created with glitchy encoders, unexpected metadata fields, non-standard character sets, etc - are the issue we face about 90% of the time in these situations, and not just with the XDJ-RX. It's not an excuse, it's the truth.

I'm going to open a ticket for you with the hardware team so they can gather some additional information and ask other questions to try and troubleshoot your issue. You should see an email with a link to the ticket.

Pulse, I've been having some trouble logging in to the site. That's why I didn't respond sooner. So far I haven't seen any email about a ticket being created, though.

First of all, let me stress again that I am very content with using Pioneer products and the functionality of the XDJ in particular.

Having said that, with a three year warranty on the XDJ, I started complaining with the reseller when the machine started having problems (this is after I used it intensely without any problems for almost a year). They are the ones that asked me to post about it on this forum as well. They thought it was a USB-drive problem too so I have gone through the process of sending them my XDJ twice, testing multiple USB-drives including one of theirs and a Scandisk Ultra USB 3.0 32GB (tested best on various websites). Finally they replaced mine with a refirbished model and I thought the problem was solved, but then last week I already had a few minor issues with this one as well.

Because of all this, combined with what you said earlier about XDJ's having a different USB host chipset than CDJ's and the fact that these problems do not occur on any other Pioneer device, I would say that a much more logical conclusion is that the hardware in the XDJ is just not capable of the computing power that is needed to perform all of it's functions. Especially when you combine a lot of them (e.g. writing and reading at the same time).

Also, I am curious how unexpected metadata can disrupt playback of an audiofile. Seems to me that all the metadata is loaded as soon is the song is and it shouldn't be able to cause any problems after that. Even if it could, I do all my tagging with Rekordbox only, so the metadata should be alright.

Anyway, I'm gonna take this up with my reseller given that they're the ones that I have a warranty with. So, for me there is no need to start a ticket but maybe that they will want to. I'll send them a link to this thread.

@Sasha > Your ticket was updated; please provide the information requested.

@Trevor > Are you still having issues? Haven't seen any replies from you.

@David > You haven't written back since the last recommendation to test with another USB drive, were you able to try that?
