That's because it's trying to figure out where the playback is first.
Couldn't think of a better title!
DVS in Absolute mode.
Play a track, then lift needle off/pause/whatever so the current song position is part way through.
Now put the needle back on the record in the dead space at the beginning (so as if to restart the track) - it will play a small sample of the current position, before jumping back to the beginning.

I still call it a bug though, it shouldn't play anything until it knows where it is (absolute mode).
It means you can't drop in live, you have to always keep the fader down just in case.
Why would you pick up the needle and place it back down with the channel live?
Dropping in accapelas 😊
It's also a bit disconcerting if I drop in the blank zone at the start and not looking at the screen, as it will play a brief noise and I'll think I put it in the wrong place.
Why not use relative mode and have access to hot cues? That makes more sense to me...?
admittedly this doesn't occur often, but if using something like a djm450, you don't have any hot cue buttons, so unless you want to keep going back and forth to your laptop, it's not an option.
