Rekordbox Master Library use on CDJ/XDJ?

I’ve read the “ReadMe” & have done some searches on the forum & google. It may be I’m not phrasing the search correctly as I can’t find anything relevant, but here’s my issue/question anyways…

I use an external Hard Drive called “MUSIC_HD” (2 partitions, this one is the primary, FAT32, 500Gb, USB 3.0) which contains all my tracks in an iTunes folder (I use iTunes to organize). Rekordbox (current version both Export & Performance options - purchased license) iTunes library file is pointing to the correct place & Database Management to this volume too. The “Imported Library” in “rekordbox xml, is located in my Home folder in the Library folder (MacBook Pro 15” mid-2014 - 10.12.6)

When connecting my hard drive to a compatible CDJ (tried with CDJ2000 Nexus & XDJ1000) I get a warning pop up to say “Rekordbox library not found”… or something to that effect. But the unit displays my other folders in the volume (but not the “PIONEER” folder itself). So, it can read the drive it just can’t see any library.

So my question is, how do I use Rekordbox with an external drive as the master, so that drive can also be plugged into (compatible) CDJs and the rekordbox library used to play tracks that are contained within? The drive is not available as a “sync device”, presumably as it’s used to maintain the Master library, but even so, I don’t want to duplicate the music files on the hard drive as they’re already there!

What am I doing wrong? Any ideas?

The problem is the 2nd partition; rekordbox and the CDJs can't read it, only the first partition. Where is everything located?

The second partition is just my Production elements & nothing to do with the Music partition. The drive and Music partition is being read as I can access the other folders it just can't find a Rekordbox Library...

To confirm, everything rekordbox uses/requires, etc is on the Music partition only...

Okay, thanks for that clarification.

Have you exported anything from rekordbox? Or is that drive only in use as the master database?

I haven't exported anything, no? Yes, that drive is only currently in use as the master database. I would like it to serve both functions - as master database & rekordbox drive to connect to CDJ/XDJs...

Well there's the problem!

CDJs & XDJs are only capable of reading export databases; not the master database. It's a pain, I know, but you need to export any tracks you have prepared within rekordbox to a device (it can be the same one your master lives on, however it will double up the space used as the audio files are also exported to that device).

Ugh, really?

So, I have to double up the space then. My next issue is that the drive doesn't show up in Sync Manager to export to that drive. In fact neither of the partitions do - only a fixed SD card I have on side of my Mac shows up?

I think I've figured that out myself! It's not formatted as MBR it's GPT... Looks like I need to reformat that partition correctly..

Yeah, that's right - it needs to be MBR to be recognized and available.

Just to finish up the query, in case anyone has a similar issue... It should be noted the current version of Disk Utility on a Mac does not permit creating partitions on a MBR drive. I had to download a different utility to be able to do this.... I used "Hard Disk Manager" for Mac as it has a 10 day full demo period.

....Another query on the back of this...

In the process of switching the drive to MBR & recreating the drive as it was, I also discovered that Rekordbox reads the Music partition (MBR-Fat32) via a Thunderbolt cable but does not see it as a Sync Device unless it's connected via USB. (I use a HD enclosure which has both Thunderbolt & USB 3.0 ports).

Is this by design? I get that drives can only be connected via USB to CDJs, but this seems overkill & presumably the software purposefully ignores drives connected via Thunderbolt as it does see a potential Sync Device in the SD Card that is inserted into my MacBook Pro slot.... and that's obviously not a USB connected device.

Yes, and I understand the frustration with that as well -- I've been using rekordbox since I had a MBP with USB2 and FW800, and man oh man was that FW800 export so much faster, but I couldn't use it because rekordbox export devices are limited to USB and SD devices.

It can be used as a source drive, but not an export drive.
