[SOLVED] CDJ 2000 takes forever to read flash drive

Couple of days ago I performed at a new Club in my town. A usual, I used USB sticks on the CDJs 2000's. The first CDJ managed to read the content of the flash drive. However, when I clicked "link" on the other CDJ, it took a loooong time to finally read the usb stick.

Today I went back to the same club. This time, the first CDJ woudn't even read the flash drive. Had to wait a couple of MINUTES so it would finally work. I always export my tracks with Rekordbox, directly to the flash drive. Is this a problem wit the cdjs or with my flash drives (I tried it with two of them. Both woudn't work. Not instantly at least...)

Anyway, if anyone knows what causes this, pleeeeeeeeeeease help me!

this may an issue with something I complained about a while back and is still not fixed. When you do exports, especially large ones, the export is fragmented REALLY bad and the cdj takes a while to read the contents and database on the drive because of this. I remedy this by doing one of 2 things, defragment the drive (which takes a long time for me) or simply "show hidden files", go into the .PIONEER folder/Rekokordbox and drag the export file to your desktop from the external, delete the export file from the external and empt the recycle bin, then drag back on the export file from the desktop to the exact same location on the external. Believe it or not this makes that one mess of a file defrayed.

I shot a video, it's about 5:00 long but shows you step by step the differences and its pretty substantial. I was hoping this was a big find for the engineers and it is just something in a programming end that can't be fixed to maybe write the pdb file differently or do its own copy/delete/paste at the end of every export. It's a small file so it wouldn't add that much time to the exporting plus it would make a lot of people happy by speeding up the read times when the USB is plugged in but nothing has been done yet. Hope this helps you

@Victor > Please explain what brand flash drives you are using and how you prepare them. Do you use rekordbox? Where do you get your audio files?

@BriChi: Thanks for the reply! Wow, juts saw the video, there's definitely a big change! But what I noticed is that there's a HUGE difference between the amount of tracks you and I have on our flash drives. Mines have about 300 tracks while yo have about 20.000 on yours. So, I think you agree with me that it's absurd for a CDJ to take a long time juts to load a usb stick with about 300 tracks, right? Other thing I have to mention is that I don't have any cdjs at my home. So it's kinda hard for me to test this, once I just use cdjs on the fly.

@Gavin: Thanks for the reply! I'm currently using a usb stick from Kingston. I've been using this one for quite a while now, and it's never showed any problem with any other CDJ. As I said before, I'm using Rekordbox. The way I prepare my flash drives is exporting my playlists to them (right clicking "Playlists" then "export to..."). All my tracks are 320 kbps mp3 files. So... could this be a firmware problem with the cdjs since i've never had this problem with any other cdjs before?

yeah, 300 tracks should load very quickly

  1. if you have not already, try formatting and re-exporting the drive, there could be "junk" on the drive causing the cdj to be slow on reading the library

  2. try a different drive, maybe a defect or something damaged

  3. definitely try and make sure the cdj's have the latest FW on them, that may be hard to see and update but could help

@Victor > We have, on numerous occasions, been receiving reports of slow loading times and issues with Kingston USB drives, with no identifiable reason why it may occur. I understand its a little cumbersome but if you had another brand USB stick (personally, I recommend Corsair) and cloned the Kingston to it I'd love to hear if this performed better.

Before you try this though, I would encourage you to try re-formatting your drive (ensure you have a backup of your files!) and ensure you have the latest firmware uploaded to the players.

Thanks again for the reply guys! Sorry for taking so long to answer. Had some issues last couple of weeks. :P

So both of you kind of had the same tips for me. Last week I played at another night club and used to same flash drives. They took a little while to load, but I as I saw that coming, I payed attention on how long it took to load. It was around 1 minute of so. Kind of a pain in the ass when you have to start playing right away. I was able to manage it though. But I'll definitely try buying some new flash drives (i'll look for the Corsair). You never know how long will it take to load my usb keys. :P

Thanks again!

I'd like to thank Bri-Chi for his above explination and video.

I have 3 years worth of tracks on a 500gb external drive, and recently it had become sluggish and slow and to a point where I was loading tracks it was taking 3-5 seconds as compared to instantly. Being a 3 deck drum and bass dj this was causing missed drops and cues.

I followed his guide and tested again after doing it and everything's snappy and instant again!

Thanks so much!

awesome, glad it helped you out, Crazy that the engineers can't put a fix in place for this yet
