First off, I've been DJing for almost 15 years using everything from turntables to the the 'first' Denon dual CD players and of course Pioneer CDJs. I've used Traktor, VDJ and Serato over the years as well. I have been very excited about RB4 and have spent many hours using it over the last few weeks. I'm not an official beta tester but here are some comments. I hope someone at Pioneer spends a few minutes looking this over and considering these issues.
Needle search should have an option to be used with a shift action (like serato). Currently it's either enabled or disabled.
Cannot drop track markers using an controller. Serato does this well with the DDJ-SX/SZ hardware. We should be able to have all the functionality right from the controller using dedicated buttons (that are already there).
Hot cue when the desk is stopped should be a CUE not CUP.
Difficult to assign loops to the hotcue buttons. For example use a hotcue to trigger a loop.
Non-intuitive method of dropping loops into the sampler. Right now you have to hover to the right of a waveform then drag. Easier interface option would be to hit a button and then click a empty hotcue on the controller to drop it there.
Cannot make instant doubles or drag one deck to another. Serato and Traktor have a functionality where you can drop a playing deck on another deck and it will be mirrored (same location, pitch, etc).
Color effects are great but due to the limitations of current hardware, only one can be used at a time. Why not add CFX to the regular effects at the top. That way I can use FILTER on the CFX knob and perhaps SWEEP or JET on the regular deck effects.
Great that Preview was added, but currently preview only works using a keyboard. Instead of redundant buttons near the track selection button (on DDJ hardware) can we assign one of those buttons to be a preview?
Having an option to switch to library view when twisting the track selection button should be present. Useful for people with 4 decks plus sampler. Currently, I have to turn to my laptop hit spacebar then go back to my controller scroll for my song, load it, then go back to my laptop to go back to regular view.
Bug - when loading a track, pitch range randomly switches to WIDE when it was set at 6%.
Option to stop sample in sampler by toggling the button. Shift-hotcue is good, but an option to toggle or mute would be better.
Cannot scrub a track. Industry standard seems to be shift and using the jog wheel. Not sure why it's not there.
Cannot see when a track has being played. CRITICAL for sets that go all night.
Key detection is good, but can we have the option of displaying Camalot Wheel instead (Like Serato 1.8 and Mixed in Key)
Bug - with quantized turned on, pressing censor only works on the quantized beat. Censor doesn't need to be quantized (in my opinion).
Pad effects - shift + pad should make the pad stick (good to free up your fingers)
Should be able to see both time elapsed and time remaining like a CDJ.
Overall, I think Pioneer has done a great job with RB. As a software guy, I can commend Pioneer for a great 1.0 release. It has only crashed once with 20-30 hours of use. There are some more bugs but I can't remember them all now.
I am sure Pioneer knows this, but this product needs to be BETTER than existing ones to make people switch. There are some great new features like pad effects which I am enjoying using but overall stability and workflow does need to improve. The controller needs to be mapped more densely to every shift-modifiying button push is being used to the full extent.
Thanks.
