List of bugs / critical missing features

First off, I've been DJing for almost 15 years using everything from turntables to the the 'first' Denon dual CD players and of course Pioneer CDJs. I've used Traktor, VDJ and Serato over the years as well. I have been very excited about RB4 and have spent many hours using it over the last few weeks. I'm not an official beta tester but here are some comments. I hope someone at Pioneer spends a few minutes looking this over and considering these issues.

  1. Needle search should have an option to be used with a shift action (like serato). Currently it's either enabled or disabled.

  2. Cannot drop track markers using an controller. Serato does this well with the DDJ-SX/SZ hardware. We should be able to have all the functionality right from the controller using dedicated buttons (that are already there).

  3. Hot cue when the desk is stopped should be a CUE not CUP.

  4. Difficult to assign loops to the hotcue buttons. For example use a hotcue to trigger a loop.

  5. Non-intuitive method of dropping loops into the sampler. Right now you have to hover to the right of a waveform then drag. Easier interface option would be to hit a button and then click a empty hotcue on the controller to drop it there.

  6. Cannot make instant doubles or drag one deck to another. Serato and Traktor have a functionality where you can drop a playing deck on another deck and it will be mirrored (same location, pitch, etc).

  7. Color effects are great but due to the limitations of current hardware, only one can be used at a time. Why not add CFX to the regular effects at the top. That way I can use FILTER on the CFX knob and perhaps SWEEP or JET on the regular deck effects.

  8. Great that Preview was added, but currently preview only works using a keyboard. Instead of redundant buttons near the track selection button (on DDJ hardware) can we assign one of those buttons to be a preview?

  9. Having an option to switch to library view when twisting the track selection button should be present. Useful for people with 4 decks plus sampler. Currently, I have to turn to my laptop hit spacebar then go back to my controller scroll for my song, load it, then go back to my laptop to go back to regular view.

  10. Bug - when loading a track, pitch range randomly switches to WIDE when it was set at 6%.

  11. Option to stop sample in sampler by toggling the button. Shift-hotcue is good, but an option to toggle or mute would be better.

  12. Cannot scrub a track. Industry standard seems to be shift and using the jog wheel. Not sure why it's not there.

  13. Cannot see when a track has being played. CRITICAL for sets that go all night.

  14. Key detection is good, but can we have the option of displaying Camalot Wheel instead (Like Serato 1.8 and Mixed in Key)

  15. Bug - with quantized turned on, pressing censor only works on the quantized beat. Censor doesn't need to be quantized (in my opinion).

  16. Pad effects - shift + pad should make the pad stick (good to free up your fingers)

  17. Should be able to see both time elapsed and time remaining like a CDJ.

Overall, I think Pioneer has done a great job with RB. As a software guy, I can commend Pioneer for a great 1.0 release. It has only crashed once with 20-30 hours of use. There are some more bugs but I can't remember them all now.

I am sure Pioneer knows this, but this product needs to be BETTER than existing ones to make people switch. There are some great new features like pad effects which I am enjoying using but overall stability and workflow does need to improve. The controller needs to be mapped more densely to every shift-modifiying button push is being used to the full extent.

Thanks.

Actually #6 is part of the Rekordbox manual. Please see page 165 calling instant double.

"For example, push load button twice to call up instant double function."

There's so much more that Pioneer needs to address in RB. If you scrub through the forum posts, you'll see that there are a lot that I have posted, as well as from others. Despite its excellent looks and feel, it feels like a beta version right now due to the lack of working functionality.

@Harry > Thanks for your comments. Here's a few replies to your notes:

1) This is the same operation as on the CDJs - you must pause the playback (or hold the jog with your hand) to bypass the strip-search lock.

2) You can create memory points or hot cues. Which markers were you referring to?

3) This, again, is to mimmic the performance of a CDJ, however engineers will be adding this preference to a future update.

4) It's quite easy... Find the point you want to create the loop, set the main cue, create your loop, record the hot cue with the loop active.

5) Sorry, I don't understand what you're tying to do here. Any sample I have, I drag-and-drop into the sampler and then change the playback mode.

6) Instant Doubles can be achieved with a controller, I'm sure this will be making it to the software for non-controller use soon.

7) Think of the CFX as a bonus for those who are using the hardware; it is unlocked based on the hardware you're using.

8) Sorry, the preview function doesn't work with controllers as the track must be loaded to a deck using that hardware.

9) You can switch the view with most controllers by pressing the appropriate button on the hardware.

10) There's two reasons this happens - one is you've got SYNC enabled and the pitch range of the new track is more than 6% from the pitch of the original track. The other reason is a bug. ;)

11) Assigning that function to the pad itself wouldn't be beneficial - the current method of SHIFT+PAD to stop a playing sample is the best function, muting would require a third option which is not available. You'll have to wait for additional MIDI support or use a keyboard shortcut to accomplish that.

12) Using the jog allows you to seek, shift + the jog is hyper-seek. You could also use the << or >> buttons if your hardware features them.

13) This will be included in a future update.

14) Camelot Notation is unavailable due to licensing issues.

15) Noted.

16) The function of a PAD FX is to be temporary, as a quick performance feature - if you want a permanent effect, many of the same effects are available in the FX section.

17) Yes, another item we should see in a future update!

8) can be fixed. Virtual DJ 7 and 8 previews (in their wording) the tracks using a currently unused deck (The software has 99 decks) and routes the output to the headphones. This works perfectly. If your software currently can preview a track using keyboard/mouse, then it's not a hardware limitation. It's just a question of assigning a button to this. I would suggest Shift parameter 1 on the left deck to start/stop. Eventually shift parameter 2 to advance in the track by 10 seconds. Again, your competitor can do it with the hardware described here.

Correction - that is on a DDJ-SX that I have tested the functionality. On CDJ's it might be different indeed! Can it be implemented for controllers?

Doubtful, especially when it's not a function already screened onto the controllers so users can identify the function by looking at the buttons/knobs.

Pulse thanks for your answer.

As for the preview feature -- it actually works with controllers. For example I have a DDJ-SX2 and I can click a song in my library and it plays through the headphones as expected. This is a huge feature for a lot of people who can't remember which track they want without committing to it by loading it. Just requesting a way to do this via controller rather than the keyborad/trackpad. The right button under the wheel doesn't seem to have a function, and this could be the preview button. Also, a shift-functionality for either of teh two buttons under the browsing wheel could work too.

As for the color effects, it is unlocked for my hardware but I can only use one at a time. Same with the top of the line DDJ-SZ (and RZ). Having the ability to use color effects in the regular effect units will allow us to use two at a time. I would rather use the color effects that we already know and love than pay for some new effect bundle with newer effects.

Thanks again for writing and forwarding the appropriate issues to the engineering team.
