Rekordbox restore question

My computer crashed and has to be replaced because it had become very unreliable.  I am waiting for my replacement to come in which will have Window 10.  My collection to include library was backed up to an external hard drive form my old computer which was running Windows 7 / Rekordbox 4.1.1.  Will I be able to restore my collection on the new computer (Windows 10 / Rekordbox 4.1.2)?

Hi DJ Bass V,

I would say Pulse is really the best person to answer that but I would say I can't see a reason it wouldn't work.

I had a laptop crash a while back and I found the best way to operate (for me anyway) was seeing all my music was stored on a USB3 external hard drive I moved the master database also to the hard drive, that way in any type of pc foul up I can simply reinstall RB and then point the master database to the external hard drive, as hard drives fail I also then clone my ext hard drive to another for backup.

Even if my laptop then has a permanent failure and I have to get a brand new one I simply add the hard drive and everything comes back intact.

I did the above as I learnt the hard way as I put RB on a new laptop and changed the user profile name, even though the music was still on the ext hard drive there were issues and the best way to resolve was just to keep the master database on the external hard drive along with the music files. To get things moving along even faster as I have a quite large database I have invested in a Samsung 1TB SSD External hard drive, this has made a massive performance boost albiet at the expense downside of the external SSD.

Sorry for the long message but hopefully will help you a bit.

Can you confirm how you "backed-up" your library? Did you use the Backup function or did you simply copy the files / folders of the rekordbox application?

Thanks John for your response.  I've been thinking about using the external drive option with Rekordbox for a while now and for sure if I do go that route, it will be a SSD drive.  The performance gained by using SSDs can be costly but well worth it., especially using a SSD as your system drive running all software.

Pulse,

I used the backup database function within Rekordbox.  When it asked if I wanted to backup music files as well, I always select yes.

Hells yes. I flat out refuse to buy another conventional HD. If a drive fails or I need a new one, SSD. The prices keep falling while capacity grows. 1TB drives are easily found under $250, and you don't even have to get the best SSD for a music collection either. My biggest love of it is the lack of moving parts - no way for me to accidentally lose my music collection simply because I moved the drive.

If you've done a backup, then the next step is, once you've got your computer up and running and rekordbox installed, doing the restoration. It will re-build your library and put your music back in the right place.

I would certainly recommend using an external drive for your collection AND database, that way you could easily move it between computers, but you should certainly have a copy of that external drive somewhere just in case. ;)
