DDJ-SZ Master Output distortion after Phantom power

Latest firmware and drivers installed. Using Serato 1.8.x software. Unit was working very well and I had to perform with a band and the engineer was using phantom power for DIs with other band members. After that event, the DDJ-SZ main XLR output no longer sounds the same. When I turn the master volume pass 12’oclock it sounds distorted and there is an apparent buzz. I thought it may have been a bad unit so I purchased a second DDJ-SZ before sending this one in for service.

Well, after using the second DDJ-SZ at another event that had phantom power turned on the FOH board, the unit’s main output was distorted again. I was able to replicate the issue with sound distortion and a buzz that comes out. Alternatively I now have to use the RCA or booth output or master outs.

So, two units, same issue.  Has anybody had this?

Yep, it was most certainly that the SZ received 48V up the wazoo and something has been damaged.

Next time, consider using the TRS jack on a board where you can't select which channels are receiving phantom power, the XLR is typically the only input to which phantom is delivered.

You'll have to contact your dealer or Pioneer DJ technical support in your region to have the units serviced.

Phantom power is not intended for DJ equipment.
It's almost always for microphones. I have one connected
to my condenser mic, then into the RZ microphone xlr input.
It sounds like something got fried due to insufficient power.

I know phantom power is not intended for DJ equipment...it's just how the board was set:  Some can turn on phantom power for one channel, others are for everything and unfortunately this board was all or none.  I think the XLR ports were fried. Of all the Pio gear I have, this is the only one that has had this issue.

Hi. I have the same problem with the canon XLR balanced output that can be done here in my country "Bolivia" no technical support pioneer. at the moment I am using the master RCA output.

I am wondering:

1. Do boards not only sent phantom through mic channels? Then a connection mistake has been made!

2. I don't remember if DI's are connected to mic or line, I would say line.

Then they will sent it on line channels as well. But how come not more equipment gets damaged? Didn't Pioneer forget to have a security thing in the controller design?

3. Is there a warning for this in Pio's manuals?

I have this problem but with the DJM 900 NXS2. Not sure i've ran Phantom power through it though. What do I do to fix this or get it sorted?

I have 2 DDJ-SZ's and they both have this same issue. I don't think anyone with a little bit of sense would deliberately decide to run Phantom. Couldn't return them because it was after 2 years this happened. Sorry Pioneer you were NOT helpful.

ITS A MISTAKE THAT CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE!

You need to replace pioneer ddj-sz audio out pcb assembly board aojk assy - dwx3537

But Pioneer continues to be unhelpful and says they only release the part to Service Centers. But the part is still not available in the UK

Good luck guys

@Praveen > Sorry, we can't allow users to post or share information on the disassembly, modification, or repair of Pioneer DJ products on our website due to the risk of harm or further damage.

The part is available from our parts distributors, but in many cases, the likely failed component is simply a resistor or transistor. Either way, I'll still direct anyone having this problem to contact a Pioneer DJ authorized service centre in your region to have their hardware inspected and/or repaired.
