DDJ SB3

Hello, I’ve recently purchased the DDJ SB3 controller and want to know if it will only power on and turn on the back button lights if I plug it into my laptop while on the serato dj app. Or should it just light up if I just plug it into my laptop USB without being on serato or even just plugged into the wall.
