Four dead DDJ-400's In a Row

Well this has been fun.

I bought a DDJ-400 at a local shop. It worked for two days, then wouldn't power on. I tried it with multiple computers and with the staff in the store. Dead.

Exchanged it, brought it home, Dead.

Exchanged it, plugged it in. It worked once. Then dead. Gave up.

Went to another shop and bought one there. It worked once.

I have tried multiple MacBooks and power supplies, adaptors and cables on all of these and they really are completely dead. In the shop they plug them in to a USB that is powering a demo unit. Still dead. The plug the demo unit back in and it turns on.

So what's with all the dead DDJ-400s? Is anybody else experiencing this? Maybe a bad batch sent to Stockholm?

Obviously I thought it was my computer. But I googled and apparently USB can NOT destroy a device.

Very frustrating.

Hi Paul,

I'm sorry to hear that -- it certainly is unusual to get multiple bad units, and in most cases when a USB-powered controller fails, it's because it's not getting adequate power from the host computer (or a bad cable).

A computer with a short circuiting USB port could certainly kill a product, but it's highly unlikely.

Did you happen to note the serial number(s) of the units you had purchased which were bad? I can certainly report this to our QA team for investigation, as I've not heard of anything this severe with the DDJs.

Sure, thanks for looking into it. I kept a photo of the first serial number THMP248547NN

The unit from the other store is THMP252760NN

Just FYI I connect with my AS-1, MPC 2500, printer and charge my phone via USB. I have a 2017 MacBook Pro.

Yeah, that's a massive jump in the production numbers, so I couldn't even say that it was due to a run of bad components during assembly... which leads me to believe that the computer is the more likely culprit here.

You said you tested with multiple MacBooks, but was that after you had connected it to your main computer?

I tried the other computer after blowing the DDJ. This was just to see if it was really dead.

I supposed it's possible that it's my MacBook but I count 15 other USB devices, all of which I can plug into my MacBook with confidence that they won't blow up and that the USB will work fine. OB-6, AS-1 (Pioneer), MPC 2500, USB sticks, USB drives, USB hub, 4 Prok eurorack drum modules, KeyStep Pro, and a couple Roland boutique synths. No issues on a single one of them and I am not worried about any of them blowing up.
