Perform in Ableton - Mix on DJM900 - Record in Ableton

Im a little confused on setting up my DJM900 to perform and record in Ableton. I think my confusion is not knowing exactly which physical ins/outs on the DJM900 are available in Ableton.

What I was hoping to do is route 3 Ableton tracks into CH1, CH2 & CH3 on the DJM900. I want to trigger tracks on those 3 channels in Ableton and mix the audio of those 3 Ableton tracks with the DJM900 faders, eqs and FX. I then thought I should be able to route the physical 'Master Record Output'  on the DJM900 into CH4 on the DJM900 and configure a 4th audio track into Ableton to record from CH4 on the DJM900. As to record the sum of the 3 Ableton tracks mixed via DJM900 CH1,2,3.

I have routed Ableton tracks to the DJM900 channels fine but they seem to be prefader, as the meters on the DJM900 bump while the fader is down. When I try to record I get lots of clipping.

I'm surprising myself that I am this confused by my mixer having an interface, but as I said I am confused which ports are what as far as my 8 IN and 8 OUT on the DJM900. Are the channel RCAs able to be used as INs or OUTs? Or are the Master XLR, Master Out 2 RCAs, and the Record Out RCAs my outputs. I haven't found a schematic that labels the ports and what I assumed is not lending the results I expected.

Can someone please straighten me out?

  • I do have the latest DJM900 drivers on a MacBook Pro OSX 10.6.8 with Ableton Suite Live 8.3 -

@Matt > The meters showing activity is correct as they are monitored pre-fader.  If you want to record back into Ableton, you're already doing the right thing by selecting the master (or you could even use REC out, which is pre-Master fader) -- but it might simply be a matter of adjusting the input channel gain (in Ableton) and make sure that the recording channel is NOT being sent as an output to the mixer at all.

Yes, you are able to assign the analog-ins to be dumped into the software as well, just not individual outs.  Unfortunately I don't have my DJM900 right now so I can't shoot a video for you, but ask the technical questions and I'll do my best to answer from memory!
