djm 900 nexus and time code use

Hi all.

Just wondering if the djm 900 nexus will pass a time code signal from other djing programs other than Traktor?

Thanks

Viking

The only other program I can comment on would be Serato; you can definitely use the 900 in conjunction with Serato. However, you are going to need the hardware (sl1, sl2, sl3, and sl4) in order to use the software (ScratchLive).

Thanks for the response HouseKeys. Does anyone know if the djm 900's internal sound card  will pass a sime code signal for Virtual DJ Pro 7 thus eliminating the use of an external soundcard/patch bay eg. Native Instruments Audio 4 DJ?

Is the answer of "No" based on a theoretical guess or has somone tried to do this and it didn't work?

No it's based on the fact that the internal soundcard of the DJM900 cannot generate a timecode signal.  That comes from the CD or vinyl coded which passes through the DJM900 as an audio source same as any other mixer.

But reading the 2nd part of your question you are asking about eliminating an Audio 4.  The soundcard in the DJM900 can be a direct replacement for the Auido 4 but again timecode is completely different than just using a soundcard to route the software audio through.  As Housekeys said to use Serato you will need an SL box and timecode.  The DJM900 cannot do this.  If you want to use Virtual Dj and route the audio through the mixer then this can be done.

Thank you for your detailed response Hesitant.

I'm aware that a mixer with an internal sound card or any sound card/patch bay (Audio 4) cannot generate a time code signal.  I guess my question(s) were a bit miss leading or worded incorectly.  For that I apologize.  I was trying to keep my questions "short and sweet" but seeing that it didn't work, here's the extended version.

My current set up is 2 DVJ X1's time coded to a djm 800 using Native Instruments Audio 4 sound card and Virtual DJ Pro 7.  I use the roland/cakewalk um-1g usb-midi interface so the 800's cross fader controls Virtual DJ's video cross fader.  I am well aware that it is an "over kill" set up, but i still use the occasional dvd or cd not to mention if my computer ever crashes (which it never has, knock on wood lol) i have a back up system in place.

Some one is interested in buying my djm 800 but I will only sell it and replace it with a djm 900, if the djm 900 will do the job of the Audio 4 in the time coded set up mentioned above.

So, will the djm 900's internal sound card "pass/listen/understand" a time coded signal from my DVJ's, allowing my DVJ's to "communicate" with Virtual DJ thus allowing me to eliminate my Audio 4 soundcard?

If your software does not require a dongle like Serato requires their box (SL1 or 2 ...) then yes you can.

Traktor does not require an external box to use time code as their box (the audio 4 or 8 ...) is simply a sound card and this would mean that IF your software does not require a magic box that comes with it, then you can simply use the 900.

Go to a music store with your laptop and try for your self.

Cheers

Pretty much what John Walsh has just said.  Yes you can replace the Audio 4 with the soundcard in the DJM900 but I did mention that in my above post.  The DJM900 soundcard has more input/outputs than an Audio 4

Thanks to all who contributed on this topic.

You are correct, Hesitant.  You did mention it in your previous post but i just wanted to be 100% sure.  That's why I restated the question in more detail with my current set up.

The fact of the matter is that there are no music stores in my area that have any pioneer or higher end dj equipment in their inventory.  The closest store is an 8 hour drive away and they're just a store.  I highly doubt they would be able to answer such a specific question unless they themselves were actual users of the equipment which I bet they are not.  So, if it was as easy as going to a local store to try out the djm 900, I would have done so lol:) But I guess that's the point of having these forums isn't it.  People helping other people all over the world who have questions about elite, exclusive equipment. Cheers
