[SOLVED] DJM 2000 recording quality issue - db levels all correct!

Hi.  Ok i know this has been touched on many times but recently downloaded Audacity to record direct from my mixer (been using a tascam but got pinched from the booth last week  :(    I have watched Pulses video & have no problem recording on audacity or understanding the levels that need to be set on my mixer.  The levels are showing recording at about -5db on audacity but when i play it back although not distorted there are pops n cracks all over the place.  Normally this would indicate my levels were wrong but like i say all set on mixer maxing at 0db with the rear Master ATT set to -6db with the Club setting set at -5db.  Any ideas?

Hey FRYER what audio interface are you using to connect the mixer to the comptuer? U mentioned a Tascam, is that a portable recorder or an audio interface?

Even though I can see levels when recording hitting up -5dB once it hits zero it's cracked and gone forever- if you are recording from a clean digital mixer (like the DJM2000) into a digital medium (computer/hard drive) it's best to have the peak of the music not go above -14dB- so play a track, add a fitler, add an echo then check the input levels on the computer and make sure they dont' hit anything above -14dB... once recorded you can go back and fix/normalize the levels of the set. At least this way you can boost as much as you want in post- safer option to get clean live recordings.

Hope that helps

Hi the tascam is a portable recorder.

I am using djm2000 direct to my laptop using Audacity.  I think ive sorted the problem anyway now!  The levels were all fine it seems.  I was playing my recorded mix back through my mixer direct from audacity selecting the output  (djm2000)  with sound coming from channel 1.  I thought i would just check to see how it sounded using a different output from audacity.  i selected the microsoft sound mapper function connected a phono to stereo cable to channel 4 on my mixer hey presto no pops or crackles?  It seems that listening from audacity back through the usb cable to my djm2000 coming through cahnnel 1 was causing the cracks and pops?  Any idea why this would be?   Also whilst on the subject what bit should i choose when recording from audacity in the audacity settings 16bit, 24bit or 32bitfloat?  MMe or windows direct sound (using vista 32bit laptop).  Thanks

Not sure why you would have had issues sending the audio, could be something to do with the samplerate of the recording. You should be using either 16bit or 24bit depending on the settings of the DJM drivers.
