USB flash drive or external HDD ?

i swear by usb sticks.

i dont use link and have several sets of sticks ranging from 8 gig to 32 gig.

much faster and reliable and portable if you do play out.

Mechanical drives are unreliable and costly.

External HDs can be more expensive and may also require an external power source. If you've only got 50GB (only!) then why not duplicate two USB sticks and have everything backed up on one external HD for safe-keeping.

@Magistrate > Agreed with the USB stick choice. If you can fit all your music on 1 USB stick and have 1 more stick as a duplicate backup, I'd say you're set for a gig anytime anywhere on some CDJ's. Nice and light weight, no cables and no power sources needed. Just plug and play. ;)

Thanks for your fast responses :)

I ordered two USB sticks of 64 GB. I can have all of my tracks on each of them, so that makes one stick for each CDJ, perfect :)

btw, I have around 100 GB of music, but I made a selection of 'only' 50 GB so I can have all of it on 1 USB stick. Should be enough :)

This evening I'll get my CDJs, can't wait !

@Magistrate > You will only need 1 USB flash drive with all your music on it because you can connect the CDJ's via ethernet and both CDJ's can use the same USB device. The other can serve as a backup if you prefer.

Correct; 850's can not link.

I formatted one of the 64 GB USB sticks (twice) using the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool.

Now my USB stick has a capacity of only 32 GB instead of 64 GB. What did i do wrong? How can I restore the capacity to 64 GB ?

My other stick still shows a capacity of 64 GB.

It's because by default, Windows sets a 32GB limit on FAT32 partitions, therefore you can't format it any bigger using Windows (or a manufacturer)'s tool.

Try using this... I think it allows you to format larger partitions.

Not true; FAT32 will support much more than 32GB.  I've got a 250GB drive formatted in FAT32.

Maybe I was misunderstood then haha I meant that the format tool bundled with Windows sets a limit. Use any third party formatters and it'll be fine... (hence the link I gave)

I use a 500gb hdd formatted to Fat32 never ever had a prob :)

@ Magistrate > Make sure you use a 3'rd party app to format your USB device on Windows as Vicrep mentioned, and make sure you select erase it first, and create a single partition on the device. :)

@ Foster > I used the tool from Vicrep to format my usb sticks twice and their volume is OK now (both 64 GB). Both sticks work perfect with my decks. awesome :)

Is it possible to use an external HD or portable HD and connect it to a usb-hub and then run two usb cables from the hub to the CDJ-850s and 'imitate' a link function? or you would need two seperate external HDs to support 2 cdj-850s?

@Arvin > No, you can't connect one USB device to two hosts.

I have a question. I have a pair of cdj-850-k's, and I like to utilize usb flash drives from time to time. Does anyone know if the cdj's have a way of maybe "greying" out the tracks you already played kind of like in Serato? This would be a great addition to the cdj's firmware. A lot of times I have over 150 tracks on a thumb drive and cannot remember if I played a certain track.  Thanks.

Hi guys I'm thinking of getting a set of theses 850's in black. I have read there's an issue with the wave display..does it work with cds and USB or does it work generally with any input ? Thanks
