[SOLVED] Difference between exporting via Rekordbox or Normal Folder (USB)

Hi guys,

I DJ regularly in various places and normally export my sets whilst on my laptop on airplane or hotel .

Recently I was half way through a gig and my sd/usb  started coming up with the corrupt file error which a lot of people seem to be getting at the moment.

I am thinking about adding files to my usb by just dragging and dropping rather than use rekordbox.

Is there any pros of using rekordbox for exporting? I don't use the loop or cue features so that doesnt bother me.

Also can you arrange tracks in order in a normal drag and drag folder or does it automatically put it into alphabetical order?

Rekordbox was always good for arranging tracks into order for your set so thats one thing I would like to still do if possible.

Thanks!

Ben Nicky

If you don't use RekordBox to export to USB, you don't get instant waveform display (it'll be very, VERY slow) on the CDJ-2000, and the BPM calculation won't be as acurrate.

I use mixed in key for my bpm readouts anyway so it's not really a major issue for me and I don't mind waiting for the waveform to load.

Would you suggest to use it the drag and drop way then? I can't risk any more corrupt files!

@Ben > If you are not using Rekordbox you are missing out on some great functionality - tagging your files for easier searching / instant waveforms and BPM display / ability to pre-set hot cues / loops etc.

Searching alone would make Rekordbox a winner for me rather than a folder view which is all you would have with what you are suggesting.

Rekordbox often picks up corrupt files in your library too.

Ok, last question to win me over!

If I export from rekordbox to my USB on my home computer but then want to add additional files once I am on my laptop , Can I do this?

I was under the impression you can only use one rekordbox library per device (SD/USB) as the root of the files always stays the same.

Please advise :)

Ben, have you checked out mp3val In the tools &more thread in the other software section?

http://forums.pioneerdj.com/entries/20125727-mp3-tools-more

I've had the 2000k's since the start and run my tracks through mp3val before adding them to rb and exporting, it fixes any errors in the mp3s that are causing corruption on the cdjs

I take it if you are Ben Nicky of the trance persuasion you get a lot of promos, I've found sometimes these are liable to have issues needing fixed with mp3val

My personal routine is
1. Mp3val
2. Mixed in key
3. Mp3 tag
4. Import in rekordbox

If u know which mp3 it was run it through mp3val to check for an error, then select the option to repair. From experience id be surprised if it didn't flag something up

Just had like 500 of 5000 tracks with ERROR lol!

What is mp3 tag? Do i need to use that? Doesn't sound like something I need

Its only for housekeeping really, if u like to edit the tags of your mp3s, this can do multiple.

@Ben > No, you can't use the same export USB device on your laptop as you do on your dekstop, just as you can't sync your iPhone / iPod with more than one iTunes library.  We suggest using 2 different devices in that case.

As Gavin notes, there are plenty of advantages to using rekordbox over simply loading the tracks to the USB.  If the simplicity of browsing and searching doesn't win you over, the instant waveforms and playlists should.

@ Ben    The BPM calculation from Mixed In Key is not as accurate as using Rekordbox with the manual grid adjustments.  In fact, you might as well turn off the BPM calculation in MiK because its redundant when you use Rekordbox.

My order of operations is this:

1.  Download new purchased music files from Beatport   (FYI - I ONLY use AIFF files.   Never MP3)

2.  Rename the downloaded files in my preferred format:    Artist - Title (Remix) [Label]

3.  Run files through Mixed in Key.

4.  Load files in Rekordbox.

5.  Complete and/or edit any tags I need to in Rekordbox.  (Usually not very much gets changed.  Rekordbox now reads AIFF tags)

6.  Adjust beat grid inside Rekordbox.

7.  Set Cue points in Rekordbox.

Hey guys, Ive recently started using rekord box , I have no issue using the program as it is straight forward but when I'm exporting tracks to USB it is exporting each track in to there own folder and not just the playlist when I've put playlist together for different nights this is a pain.

How do i export the playlist with out all the other information like each track has its own folder. ?

@T Del La V'alle > It doesn't seem like you are searching correctly on the hardware. What CDJs are you using?
