[SOLVED] If USB 3.0 devices are compatible with CDJ 2000s shouldn't we be buying them?

I know that the CDJs only use the power/speed of USB 2.0 even if it's a USB 3.0 device. But you would think that Pioneer is going to release a 3000 (or whatever the next generation CDJ might be called) and you would think that they would upgrade the USB slot to 3.0. There isn't a massive price difference between USB 2.0 or USB 3.0. So wouldn't the smart thing be to future proof the devices you're buying now by buying USB 3.0? You won't be missing out on any speed now, but when they do upgrade the CDJ to USB 3.0 you won't have to upgrade all your storage devices.

Thoughts?

Also I've heard reports of a few problems with certain brands of USB 3.0 devices. Is there a list anywhere with which manufacturers USB 3.0 devices do and don't work with CDJs?

Cheers.

Here's the thing... USB3 isn't necessary for the playback data speed.  I've noted the math for this several times, but even if you were playing four 24bit/96kHz tracks from one USB source, the bandwidth out is still only 2MB/s (or 18Mbits/s), far below the USB2 theoretical maximum of 40MB/s and the network link maximum speed of 100Mbits/s.

The only benefit of the device would be loading it up on the computer end making for a faster export.

As for which devices work and which don't?  Well, in theory, they're all supposed to be USB2 compatible, but we know that theory doesn't always equal practice.  Your best bet is going to be to see what others have reported as working (or not) and their results.  There are simply too many devices (and variations) for Pioneer to test all on the market.

I'm pretty sure that no one is too sussed about the bandwidth requirements the players need, but rather the transfer speeds of exporting their libraries.

@Pulse

Cool, thanks for the info.

I didn't realise that even with USB 2.0 the bandwidth out is capped. Do you know if there are any plans to bump this up with a firmware update or anything? Or whether they're planning on bumping this up for the CDJ 2000 Nexus?

Well my hunt for a USB stick is over. Got a couple of the Corsair Survivor USB 3.0 32gb sticks. Wanted the Stealth versions, but unfortunately not available in my country.

@Nate > I think you misunderstood, what I'm saying is 2MB/s is maximum amount of data you COULD put through the USB system when running four simultaneous files at the best quality the system supports -- and that 2MB/s is far below the USB2.0 maximum output speed of 40MB/s, so there's plenty of overhead in the potential of USB2.0.  As both @KIKI and I have pointed out, the benefit is the export time from rekordbox, not the ability for the players to read data any faster.

To be honest the issue is with the speed that the stick loads at... if you have a 64gb stick full.... Try loading that... It takes an AAAAGE!, Thats why we need usb functionality

@Arwyn > Thats on the computer / rekordbox side of things, not the CDJs.
