CDJ2000 How do we get the information from the Display to our own software...

We are struggling to mix and match visuals that can be played via a CDJ2000, using ANY kind of software. One DJ, and he only wants to play on the CDJ2000, so the computer can be stacked away out of sight.

I assume you all know how the NUMBER ONE DJ of the world is doing it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m96MbRMzdHQ

Really WTF even HE has to use 2 CDJ2000s, one for the track and one for SMPT code, and even than he CAN NOT SCRATCH or do anything with the track and he can not even do it without contacting his VJ first.

For now we are looking to get that info rerouted from Traktor, Mixvibes, Abelton  etc etc etc... to OSC or even MIDI

I am reading here on the forums that, according to pioneer Technicians, all this is not possible, because you have to rewrite the GUI and that might introduce new bugs. Please Mr. Pioneer, for a 1500 euros device, I would really expect a bit more support.

All I want is a clean output (OSC or HID) that show me all the stuff that is on the display of the CDJ2000. So trackname, duration, current time... speed etc etc etc..

Proprietary software has that information too, so don't say it is not possible.

Sorry for my little rant, but we are looking for a solution for months now.................. :(

First, I need to point out the obvious: You're complaining that a **CD/Audio player** doesn't control video. That's not what it was designed to do, so obviously you'd need to find a work-around, like Armin and his techs have done. I have worked with him and the setup shown in the video on multiple occasions, and it's a pretty clever work-around, but it IS still a work-around. This is an example of clever DJs pushing their equipment past the normal limits of what it was designed to do. You can hardly blame Pioneer for shortcomings in this area.

Now, other options for running video along with audio:

  1. Invest in some DVJ-1000s. Pioneer have made a DJ-style deck designed exactly for the purpose you are describing.

  2. Use Serato with Timecode on CDs/USB/SDcard. Although I've never done it myself, I believe that Serato now supports playing and triggering videos directly from the software; all you'd have to do is send your video out of the computer with a second video card, or out of a laptop as an external display.

  3. If those two options don't suit you, you may be able to use Traktor to send out timecode which can be sync'd to another computer (which plays the actual videos), or even sync to another piece of software on the same computer.

  4. A final option you may want to explore is to use your Pioneer mixer as a MIDI device to trigger videos on an external computer. You may also be able to get a timecode signal out of the mixer, which could give you a rudimentary tempo.

It would be cool if Pioneer revamped the DVJ line to have all the features of the newest Nexus line, and have support for widescreen videos and all the other common video features of today

I dont think it would do to well in my opinion, it would probably coat like $3000 each and most people would just use serato and video for A LOT less

The CDJ2000 is a CD player, I understand that, but it is a CD player with a USB cable and HID protocol where other software can make use. And it is not just video, but think of Lights, Surround Samples, CO2 canons and confetti.

WHY ISN'T THIS INFORMATION OPEN? Why do I have to spend a shit load of money and time to figure out how to reverse engineer that HID info that Tracktor, Serato or Abelton already seem to have? Can some one please point me to some documentation???

DVD players only have pall or ntsc resolutions, so not really an option, Timecode is what Armin is doing, but that only gives you where the current track is, not what track you are playing, and a lot of other disadvantages. Another player as MIDI controller is the only solution but the DJs I work for only want to work with the Pioneer CDJ's.

Pioneer really seem to underestimate the creativity of some of us....

@westbam > Pioneer released the DVJ-X1, DVJ-1000 and the SVM-1000. While they were fantastic units and miles ahead of what a lot of other equipment could do, there wasn't a substantial uptake to the point where VJing might have become the "new thing". Many users are going for much cheaper options of using Serato Video or VirtualDJ. If those companies want to implement certain features and functions (HID etc) its entirely up to them.
