[SOLVED] CDJ2000 w/ LINK & Serato Control CD Problem

Hi,

Yesterday we played a DJ set whereby the previous DJ had the two CDJ2000s linked with USB.

Loading the serato control CD into the slave CDJ and chosing DISC sent a scrambled control signal to our Serato. This scramble appeared to be caused by the USB link still being in place. Obviously this scrambled signal meant we could not mix our first track and we ended up having to fade out the previous DJs track, switch off the CDJ, unplug the ethernet and start our set from scratch.

This is the second time this has happened, so we have a couple of questions:

  1. Is it common knowledge/practise that you are required to unlink the CDJs prior to using CDs? Or is that specific to using a CD with a control signal?

  2. What is the official process to follow to unlink a slave CDJ from the master CDJ containing the USB without disrupting the flow of music?

Your help will be appreciated! It caused quite a bad entry into our set!

Thanks,

James

If I am reading this correctly I have experienced this.

When you say linked by USB to you mean linked by ethernet cable?

If decks were linked by ethernet and the previous DJ was using a USB drive plugged into one of them then you  need to press the and hold the USB stop button to properly eject the USB drive you should then be able to switch the input to CD and use your serato CD without issue and without turning off the deck and turning it back on.

Hi,

Yes sorry, USB via ethernet.

Your solution, does this allow for the USB on the other deck to continue playing the track and just release the slave CDJ for use with a CD?

i.e. we cannot physically eject the USB as it is needed to continue the previous DJs song whilst we mix in with our own via serato!

Thanks,

Can you not replicate the problem at home or do you not have the equipment to do so? If not I can but not until tmrw night when I am back home

No we don't have the equipment to replicate sorry.

The setup prior to us was one USB on left hand deck, feeding right hand deck through ethernet and link.

Last track was on left hand deck where USB was situated. We put serato disk into right hand CDJ and set the CDJ to disk. The signal received through the Rane SL3 into our laptop was scrambled and red lining, but pulsating with the rhythm of the music, so presumably was the link causing it.

We faffed around for ages, looking stupid, then just switched off the CDJ, yanked out the ethernet and restarted it....

This def felt like a bodge though! Would prefer to be able to just set to Disk and go, or follow a correct process to unlink :)

Thanks for the help!

Ok James I actually made it home tonight so I have tested this and I will do my best to get the info across clearly on here.

I will keep this reponse as simple as possible. The setup does work how you need it to and you need to complete the following steps and you will not have an issue.

  1. Ensure on the Serato software you deselect the 'Thru' option on the slave deck
  2. Load your timecode CD into the slave desk
  3. Click the 'Disc' button on the CDJ
  4. Then push the rotary selector in (this will load track 1 from the timecode cd into the CDJ and effectively break the link between the 2 players)
  5. Go back to Serato and drag onto the deck the track you want to play and all should work fine.

There are two areas i think you may have fallen down on the other night and that is not deselecting thru on Serato and not pushing the rotary selector to tell the CDJ to load track 1 of the timecode CD.

Hi,

Thanks for this... We didn't push the rotary, so I think this is where we fell down. We loaded the CD, chose DISC on the CDJ and then hit the play button which would normally launch the first track.

I understand now that you need to use the rotary to break the link.

Thanks!

This issue is user-error:

If you are using HID for direct control of the software over USB, you do NOT need the timecode CD.

If you are NOT using HID, using the timecode CDs have no bearing on whether or not the players are currently connected via USB as the players are not transmitting data.
