[SOLVED] Sound quality issue CDJ-2000 vs CDJ-2000nxs

Ive been waiting to get a pair of Nexus principally for the improved master tempo and the sync function. I borrowed a pair and tested them against my 2000 mk1s. I used a wav file with a clean production and tested the same file on both machines, going from -10 to +10 in master tempo. I was very surprised with the results.

The Mk1s have a clearer sound, brighter, punchier, with better sound seperation, clear top and bottom end. The sound jitters (as moaned about in many a previous post) and stutters though, especially as the tempo drops.

The Nexus sounded muggy, with a muddled midrange, lacked definition across the spectrum, but had particularly poor reproduction in the mid and bottom end the further from 0 it went. When switching from Mark 1 to Nexus and back the quality contrast was alarming....far more noticeable than the difference between a wav and an mp3 for example.

So we updated the firmware just in case and tried again. Same shit.

Sound is often a subjective thing but in this case the Nexus were clearly of poorer quality. NB I was only testing in MT mode.

Any explanations for this?

Were you using digital or analog connection to the mixer?

If digital, was the CDJ set to 16 bit or 24 bit digital audio?

If playing 16 bit tracks while using the 24 bit setting, there is serious audio signal degradation.

@Fuse Promote - THANK YOU!  I've had my CDJ2000 Nexus's (Nexi ?) for a year.  Always wondered why my sounds seemed a bit distorted, and put it down to my headphones, or disco deafness over the years.  I bought some newer cans a few months back and the sound quality was worse.  I didn't realise that the bit rate made such a difference.  All of my tracks are .wav, 44.1khz, 16bit.  Set my 3 decks all to 16bit, and wow!  What a difference.  And the cue level pot is about 1/2 of what it was before changing.
