XDJ-RX Initial Thoughts and Requests

Overall, the unit feels solid, controls are firm.  I noticed that certain features seem to have a lag (dropping hot cues as samples, for example) when quantize is on, which is somewhat expected behavior, but it just 'feels' a bit slower than a 2k.  Might be my imagination, will fiddle with it more.  Scratching the platter seems plenty tight with no perceptible wander.  Next test here will be side by side with one of my 2k's plugged into the line input and roll through a mix that way to see how they really compare.

Recording to wav files feature is nifty.  So, tell me how to set the clock and date for time stamping.  The same applies to the History playlist time stamps.  The thing thinks it is January 1 2014.  I did not see a time setting in the Utility menu.  Speaking of recording, there is nothing on the display to indicate amount of time recorded, and time remaining on the stick.  The only indication a recording is taking place is the blinking REC light.

In general, I find the live view waveforms distracting.  I'd like a setting where I can select the default screen behavior to be either Browse or Waveform.  The track profiles in the deck windows are fine, they show the cues and all, and I spend a fair amount of time searching for tracks, and setting the default to Browse would save annoying button presses.  The behavior is more like a 2000 classic, while the RX behaves more like a Nexus.

Master Tempo seems to be similar in quality as a Nexus, and better than a 2000 classic.  I need to try it on some D&B to make sure.

Color Effects:  Noise and Filter...really would like a resonance setting in the Utility menu for these.  Personally feel that both Noise and Filter have a little too much cray cray, though there are some times were peaking works well.

Jog wheel sensitivity:  Control response feels too hot IMO.  It might be because I'm used to big wheels.  But if I pull the same beat matching corrections like my 2k's, I've overshot the goal rather than land on a pin head.  In any case, it'd be nice to have a Utility setting for response (say 100 counts in a range of +/- 50%?).  That way folks can set it to their personal taste.

Missing that Pan knob, and there was plenty of room over there in Booth and Master land, LOL...  Okay, here's a little compromise:  Upgrade the Trans effect to include a ping-pong option (configurable in the Utility menu to give folks a choice).  I'd just leave it in ping-pong mode.

The beast is pretty damn big.  For pop-up gigs, I will need to fashion a carrier to fit around the mixer and/or decks.  The layout is pretty relaxed, it could have been made more compact, but that display is really nice...I would not want to give that up (unless you shrunk this thing with two OLED displays representing the deck windows onto an AERO sized widget.  Still, this RX will be in my kit for a while...first time a new piece of Pioneer gear will make it past the trial period in an age.  Well done.

V1.5 firmware, btw...

Thanks for your comments @pope.

Unfortunately there is no internal clock, so the date stamping can not be set. We hope a future firmware update will include a display of the amount of time recorded - this has already been noted by other users as well.

The behaviour of the display is designed to be more consistent with the nexus units, as such the waveform is front-and-center. Unfortunately there is no option to set a default view and you'll just have to get used to pressing a button to not have it onscreen.

There is no preference availability for the effects settings, but the comments have been passed on regarding customization.

Was thinking about the waveform display and why I don't like it, has something to do with the way the display 'slides' (think was mentioned by someone else on another thread).  Nexus decks have that dual deck 4-bar counter thingie which I also find irritating.  If the purpose of a waveform display is to help folks beatmatch better, it would be better to have a phase comparator display to show if the grid of one deck was in advance or lag of the other.  I still use my ears, but find the existing display to cause me to second guess and make unnecessary corrections.

Okay, I'll just hit the damn 'Browse' button and get over it;)

...and soon you will request a track selector feature which choose track automatically...

XDJ RX is a great device, which is able to "simulate" the handling of the cdj 2000 nexus.  And you can prepare, test and pratice your rekordbox selection, you will be fine at a real gig . And because of Sync funtion it is ideal to make a proper studio mix.

Waveforms are mostly a design element imo, it is great to see what happens in the tune, but c'mon....it is really a big shame if someone  ( a dj?) doesnt even know its own tunes, isnt it?

You wont make unnecassar correction if you practice more. Take yor time and use your ears.

Track selector feature:  You know that's coming in development, right?  Those are core to the Kuvo hooks we're complaining about in that other thread.  You might not know that the XML database also has hooks for cue in, cue out, fade in, and fade out markers, so that at some point a fully automated mix can be performed.  In theory, you could pick a track and the system would automix the most common/popular combinations.  I can only imagine this to leading to a homogenized mess of noobs, but I digress.

I agree about the Waveform thing being a design feature (probably to look more like traktor or serato).  I don't know if it's a shame or not, I reserve judgement to how the floor reacts to a set.  Taking time to use my your ears is another way of stating the basis of my complaint:  Being a primate, I'm distracted by moving/shiny objects, and the waveform display tends to take me away from the music.  So, after a load a track I'll just make it a habit to hit the Browse button to remove the distraction and focus on mixing and track selection.  BTW, this is one of the primary reasons I chose to not upgrade my 2000's to the Nexus spec.  They work good enough, and when I'm practicing I can focus on the important stuff. When gigging, the differences in user interface don't warrant a switch (at least to me).
