XDJ-RX randomly going to emergency loop and forcing USB reload when loading song...

I am having a recurring problem that happens maybe once every 5-6 hours of mixing on the XDJ-RX.  Basically it stops reading the USB and sets an emergency loop on the playing deck at the point I load a track on the opposite deck.  I saw it get stuck loading the first cue point on the new track just before it set the loop on the playing deck.  At this point I then have to work with the emergency loop that is playing and remove and re-insert my USB drive and only then I can mix out of the emergency loop.

There is no specific error message it just says it cannot be played and the USB then becomes unrecognised so I cannot even browse it without unplugging.  Things to note:

* Firmware is v1.50

* USB drives are 32GB USB 3.0 Sandisk thumb drives - brand new but have had this problem with both drives at different times

* All music is high quality - mostly from Beatport no dodgy downloads or anything

* All music is analysed and prepared in Rekordbox

* If I reload the exact tracks that were playing when I had the problem it does not re-occur so the music files are not at fault...it seems to have no logical trigger!

I cannot work out if my XDJ-RX is an issue or it doesn't like the USB drives?  It is very frustrating when this happens playing out!

@DJ promiss > I'm sorry but there are simply too many out there for us to be able to test each version and variation even within one model line, as manufacturers will often change part suppliers during production so one version of a drive works fine but another does not.

I personally recommend if you are looking for a USB drive for use with performance DJ equipment, that you spend a little bit more money and get a performance drive. For example, if an average 32GB drive is in the $20 range and a performance drive is $40, it's worthwhile getting the more expensive one, if only for the fact it will be faster to load music TO, with a potential bonus of it being more reliable and stable.

Should point out pulse the drives in question here are USB 3.0 drives with high speed data transfer from a reputable manufacturer, not cheap drives.  My new slower and cheaper USB drives are not an issue with the XDJ-RX (linked above) and nor are my old budget drives...so in theory you make a good point but in this situation doesn't seem to apply...anyway good luck to those who are still struggling on with the SanDisk Ultrafit drives, hopefully issues are found and resolved.

@Ed > I don't believe the UltraFit drives are what I would consider "performance." While yes, Sandisk is a reliable manufacturer, they could still be using components that are lower quality in certain products... or quite simply that the particular interface chips for those devices are where the problem occurs.

A few years ago with the CDJ-400, we had issues with a certain line of Western Digital Passport drives because of how much power the drive drew at spin-up. The manufacturer rating for the drive use was reported lower for both spin-up and constant-use / seek, but the drive required more than the rating and as a result, wouldn't work properly with the CDJ-400. Other models in their line were fine. It just goes to show that even a reliable drive manufacturer can produce something that doesn't work universally with everything else, even though we expect it to because it has a USB connection.

@promiss > I have used a Patriot Rage XT 32GB USB2 drive for a long time and the performance there is great for a USB2 drive. They have a USB3 model of the same family, but their Supersonic Rage USB3 drive offers the best R/W performance of their USB devices.

I've had good success with Corsair as well - their GT, GS and new SSD-based GTX drives are top-of-the-line and insanely faster than anything out there. http://www.corsair.com/en-ca/usb-drives

ADATA also offers a zippy USB drive, the UE700 (220MB/s read / 135MB/s write) - http://www.adata.com/en/ufd/feature/210

Lexar's P20 is their highest-performance drive - http://www.lexar.com/flash-drives/jumpdrive-p20?category=207

Mushkin has a very fast, and well reviewed drive, in varying capacities, the Ventura Ultra - http://poweredbymushkin.com/catalog/33-ventura-ultra

If you want something Solid, Lacie's XtremKey is actually pretty fast as well - https://www.lacie.com/ca/products/product.htm?id=10612

There's also a decent round-up of drives in a review on WireCutter, but they seem biased to SanDisk, and while the model they tested may not have problems with Pioneer products, we know the smaller model possibly does and just to stay safe, I'd not (personally) recommend the SanDisk brand USB drives just in case.

Hi guys, hi Marm!!

I just thought I'd throw my thoughts in to this pot after experiencing the same issue tonight. I too use the ultra fit san disk drives. This issue has happened a few times to me in the past but I always have a second drive plugged in and switch as quick as I can. Tonight however it happened twice in the space of 15 minutes so I presumed my drive was corrupt, stored it away and played off my backup drive. After reading through this thread I have two observations which may help to narrow down the issue.
1) Every time this issue has occurred it has always been on USB port 1, never USB port 2. This could however mean it's just one stick as I always put them in the same slots (May try switching around next week).

2) The drive is always extremely hot when I eject it after the issue! I can however remove it and replace it back in the same port and it will read again

I also must add that I feel this issue is isolated to the XDJ-RX. I use both USB drives at other venues on CDJ 2000 NXS and they are fine.

Hope is helps

Hi,

I checked this post 2 months later from the first message. I'm wondering if the solution for this issue was found:
* Firmware is v1.50 (I read v1.60 didn't solve this issue)
* USB drives are 32GB USB 3.0 Sandisk thumb drives - brand new but have had this problem with both drives at different times and different equipments
* All music is analysed and prepared in Rekordbox
* If I reload the exact tracks that were playing when I had the problem it does not re-occur so the music files are not at fault...it seems to have no logical trigger!
* It happened to me after 4 or 5 hours playing one time, another time after 2 hours
* Also happened when I moved to the next track very quickly and pushed the Previous track button
* I used the same memory thumb in the CDJ 2000 Nexus for hours without any issue
* I checked the memory thumb FAT using mac disk utility and there was no problem with it.

Let me know if there is something I can do.

Thanks.

Hi. After the post I used for few days a datatraveler 8GB. Then I went back to the Sandisk and I didn't have any problem with it, until today. I used a lot it during the week and weekend. Today I was playing a track on deck 2 (thumb drive on USB 1) and I was doing some disc scratch on Deck 1, using the scan button as well and then it froze. I moved to USB 2 and I left it playing (auto cue off, I was having a dinner) and then it happened again. I have already updated to 1.60. I will spend 1 week using the kingston this time and see what happens.

I am having problems with sandisk and transcend which both worked perfect on my cdj 900s. So it seems To be a Xdj Problem. Now bought a kingston hope that solves the problem. At least there had to be a warning in the manual about the known problems with this brands, very frustrating.

@Tobias > It's not in the manual because not EVERY user has the problem, and it's possible that the USB drive manufacturers could change their devices through production cycles and wind up with units that work flawlessly (or others that now fail constantly). There are far too many USB drive options on the market for us to test and keep a running tally of each and every drive and its compatibility. As those are a consumable, it's up to the user to check compatibility.

its not the USB stick as it has started happening to me last night working off a Mac via RG45 same issue emergency loop on both decks at one point and nothing i could do, tried memory stick and still couldn't get any control. RX froze completely twice and had to be switched off and back on again , a third time i managed to unfreeze by restarting mac while playing through line in with my phone. not a nice experience, completely ruined the night.

This issue typically occurs when the player loses communication with the music source.  Try using a different network cable.

Anything!?!?! Please help I have a two night gig next week

Try another USB drive would be the first thing I would suggest also try the other USB input. When mine had a problem it was an electronic issue with the power supply but that is fairly unusual.

Also try connecting it to a laptop and see if you still have the problem
