external hard drive?

how do i access my external hard drive when using a ddi sx and macbook? when using serato, i could search for the external drive select it, then access all the music through the sx. is it something simple i am doing wrong? or do i need to shift all my tracks from the external drive to iTunes? if so i don't think this software is for me
