DJM-S9 sound distorted when wireless mic plugged in

Hey guys, has anyone else had any issues with their S9 when a wireless mic is plugged in?  The last few gigs I've done, I've used two different shure microphones, and when they were plugged into the the mixer, the sound coming from the speakers distorted badly. The highs on my speakers distorted to the point that they made the speakers pop, and I didn't have the mic level on the mixer high.  The high/bass for the mic were between 9 and 12 o'clock.  I also made sure that the actual mic levels (on the mic and receiver) were not affecting this.

I also lowered the Master Attenuation in the S9 utility closer to the minimum, and even played around with the Master ATT switch on the back of the mixer, to no avail.  The mic line switch on the back of the mixer was set to mic, and not line.

I was using two JBL PRX 715's for tops, a QSC K8 for monitor, SDJ 1.8, and the mixer is on the latest firmware, 1.05.  I also run Yosemite.

Have you tried a wired Mic to see if the problem is there as well?  I tend to think the mics are overdriving, are they plugged in with an XLR cable or a 1/4" cable?  Also do you have it set to Mic or Line?

I actually tried a wired mic, too, and the problem didn't seem to occur.  The mics were plugged in via XLR.  It was set to Mic.  I will say, however, that I did not have this problem with my 62.  Only happened with the S9.

Does the sound begin to distort when the wireless mic system is on and plugged in while the DJM mic switch is off? Or does the sound distort when the wireless mic system is on, plugged in, and the mic switch on the DJM is turned on?

Have you also tested the wireless mic without the DJM? It sounds like there is some sort of interference coming from somewhere. Hopefully your mics are not running on 2.4GHz or 4.8GHz spectrum as those are common for wireless home phones and wireless access points. A buddy of mine uses a cheap wireless mic for weddings and I found out it runs on the 2.4GHz spectrum and it would pop now and then especially when he uses his wireless DMX system which also runs on 2.4GHz.

Kyle,

The sound distorts when the wireless mic system is on, plugged in via XLR, and the mic switch on the DJM is turned on.  I've tested, and used the wireless mic with my Rane 62, and had no issues whatsoever.  I was/am using a Shure BLX24R/SM58 Wireless System, so it's definitely not a cheap mic system.

I also noticed that this happened when the sound was at a much higher level than when I tested it during the early stages of the parties.  When this occurred, the mic level was low, and the master was not red lining.

I know this might sound like a hassle but I looked up the service manual on that mic and there may be a couple things you can try. The mic system appears to have both a gain on the mic and an output gain on the receiver. You might want to try adjusting those to see if it helps.

I tried a wired (Shure SM58) and wireless (EV RE-2) and neither of them caused any issues. Does your wirelss mic have the ability to send a line signal that you could connect to the same MIC input on the S9 but with the input set to LINE mode?

The wireless mic does not have the ability to send a line signal, and I actually JUST tried both a wired mic, and a wireless one with an XLR cable at the club where I am spinning tonight, and they both sounded extremely distorted. The main knob is at 2 o'clock, and the mic knob is approximately at 7 o'clock... Barely on.  I tried two different mic cables to rule that out.  The booth/monitor was off on both instances.

Pulse, could the mic limiter, or master limiter setting, which is on, be the cause this issue?  What should these two settings be set to?

The receiver of the wireless mic, which I'm assuming is what is plugged into the mixer, outputs at "Line" level, so on the back of the mixer, make sure to switch the input to "Line" from "Mic"!
