The databases are compatible, but if you can, update the old one from 3.3 to 4.0.5, then export the database and on the new computer, import the database.
I have bought a new laptop running windows 10. My old laptop has 8.1. and I am using RB3.3.0 on it. How do i migrate to my new machine? I cant install 3.3.0 on the new windows 10 machine because there is no link for it anywhere (only link to new 4.0.5).

how do I import? choosing to export gives me a zip folder. what do i do with that?
The export creates a file, I recommend doing it without including the music, which you then select on the import of the new computer.
What step are you stuck on?
the problem is that RB 4.0.5 doesn't work on my 8.1 machine, It never did work right from back at the 4.0 release so i un installed it and kept using 3.3.0 .
Okay, so just export from 3.3 and then import that with 4.0.5 on the Win10 machine.
i just installed 4.0.5 on the old machine again. still doesn't work (it hangs whenever i load a track). but i was able to export the bak zip folder to a thumb. and i was able to restore the library on new windows 10 machine. collection looks complete, playlists look good. So when i drag a track up to the player it plays, when i drag another track it takes about 6 seconds for it to load into the player. Not good! same problem as before. It shuldn't take 6 seconds to load a track into the player right??
What is the source of the music, an external drive?
nope. my music folder on C drive
seems like they are loading faster now. down to a few seconds. still seems a little bit slow seeing how i have a real fast new machine. (SSD drive, i7, 16G ram). I'll keep playing around and report back. thanks for the help so far.
They shouldn't really take "a few seconds" to load, especially from an SSD. On both my Windows and Mac computers, tracks load within a 1/4 second.
Is it possible that they are having to analyse the waveforms or update them as they're not the newer version?
Try loading a track you have previously loaded in 4.x and see if it's faster.
