Pioneer DDJ-WEGO3 controller, DJay 2 and VoiceOver Pre-Cuing problem.

Hello,

I'm visually impared and thanks to the excellent DJay 2 software being completely accessible using VO (Voice Over) I'm once again pursuing my dream of becoming a DJ.

I've encountered a problem though.

I rely on VO to access my playlist of songs that I wish to play through my Pioneer WEGO3 controller. The problem comes in when pre-cuing. I of course don't want the VO messages being heard through the Master audio out, only through my headphones. What is the best setup for achieving this without having VO effecting the volume of the Master audio out?

I tried the following setup which works somewhat:

  1. Connected my iPad to the WEGO3 controller.
  2. Open the DJay 2 settings.
  3. Open “Audio Device Setup.”
  4. Set the main output to "Channel 3&4."
  5. Set the pre cue output to "Channel 1&2."
  6. Connected my headphones to the Master output of the WEGO3 (RCA connections in the back of unit.)
  7. Connected my speakers to the 3.5mm headphone output of the WEGO3 (Connection on leftside of unit.)

Since all iOS system messages are sent through channel 1&2 this allowed me to hear VoiceOver messages through my headphones along with pre-cuing.

There is only one huge problem. Everytime VoiceOver is telling me something, all other channels are limited, so even the Master audio output will be limited (Volume drops 50 - 70%.) Returns to normal volume after VO stops speaking.

Does anyone here know of a work around? Any visually impared users of DJay 2 and the Pioneer DDJ-WEGO3 controller using pre-cuing successfully with VO?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

@Saylien > I've moved this question to the DDJ topic, in case you're browsing to find it in future.

I hadn't had much experience directly with the Accessibility or VoiceOver settings on Mac, but if there's one thing I know, it's all the other audio systems. So after poking around a bit and experimenting on my WeGO1, I am confident that I have found answers to your questions!

First thing you'll need is to download Soundflower; think of it as a software audio mixing board, allowing you to combine sources and redirect sounds.

After installing, you'll need to restart your computer. Once you're back up, go into the VoiceOver settings, and click on the Sound tab on the left. Set your Output Device to be Soundflower (2ch) as pictured:

VoiceOver Output Device setting

While you're there, also uncheck Enable output ducking to prevent the audio from dipping.

Next, open the Soundflower item from the menu bar, and select the PIONEER DDJ-WeGO from the 2ch section:

Soundflower 2ch Config

Go back to the Soundflower item on the menu bar and go to Soundflower (2ch) then Channel 1 and select the 3rd output. Repeat the process for Channel 2 assigning it to the 4th output:

Soundflower Ch2 Channel Config

Now load up djay and open the preferences. Set the Main Output to Soundflower (64ch) and select ch. 1&2. Set the Pre-Cueing to Soundflower (64ch) and select ch. 3&4.

djay Devices Config

You should now hear the VoiceOver on the headphone output without having any headphone cue selected on the WeGO or software. You will NOT the VoiceOver on the master output. There will also no longer be any ducking of the audio when a VO is read!

If, by chance, the WeGO3 has been configured backwards from my WeGO fist generation unit, please reverse anywhere I have said 1&2 with 3&4, and vice-versa.

Please let me know if this works for you.

Oh! This Soundflower App is only for the Mac? I'm using an iPad with the Pioneer controller to DJ. Is there a similar app available that works with iPad? Please tell me there is one and I'll keep my fingers double crossed that it is totally accessible to VO.

Ahhhh... you said djay, and VoiceOver and I assumed you were using OSX not iOS. No, Soundflower is only for OSX. I'll have to take a look at the iPad options in terms of the VoiceOver.

I realize now that you did say "iOS" in the original post, I must have missed that. :o

Sort of my fault. Instead of saying in my initial post "thanks to the excellent DJay 2 software" should had said thanks to the excellant DJay 2 iPad app.

Did come across a potential iOs app called AudioBus (http://audiobus.zendesk.com/home) which seems to do what SoundFlower does, but just for the iPad. Not quite sure if it looks upon Voice Over as an audio app? Doesn't look like it supports the DJay 2 app too. This is one time an app demo of AudioBus would come in quite handy for testing.

Hopefully someone here can shed more light on the functionality of AudioBus?

Thanks for telling me this info.

I did email the developer a few days regarding the accessibility of their app using VO, but haven't heard back from them yet.

I've also come across a little quirk that allows me to hear VO through my iPad's headphone jack while having my WEGO3's Master audio output connected to my speakers and also having the 3.5 headphone jack connected to a pair of conventional over-the-ear headphones.

The trick is that I also need to have a pair of Apple ear buds plugged into the iPad to monitor VO through it. Not having any plugged in redirects all VO output through the WEGO3 Master audio channels 1 - 2.

SO I insert the ear buds in my ears first (To monitor Voice Over output) and put a pair of over-the-ear headphones on top of them to monitor the pre-cuing info sent by the WEGO3 controller.

After a while having 2 sets of headphones in/on my ears becomes quite uncomfortable, but it does work.

Now if there was a pair of headphones or an audio controller on the market that would allow you to monitor multiple audio devices (3.5mm connections) through one set of headphones I would have it made.

I mean I would simply plug a male 3.5mm cable into the headphone jack of my iPad and connect the other end into the audio controller's input connection 1. Plug another 3.5mm male cable into the headphone jack of the WEGO3 and the other end into the audio controller's input connection 2. Plug my over-the-ear headphones into the audio output connection of the audio controller... and I would be all set to monitor both devices through one set of headphones!

Tried doing some Googling for a possible candidate, but can't come up with the right query to bring up the propper information.

Any suggestions? Any audio splitter cable or stand-along audio controller capable of doing this?
