DJM-900nxs2 subtle background noise in headphones

Hello,

I'm using the new DJM-900nxs2 since a week. I've noticed a subtle background noise in the headphones.

This noise, that more or less is like a noise made by a fan, is present no matter if I'm using 1/4 inch or mini jack outputs.

It doesn't even depend on the volume I'm using in the cue monitor output. It is present without any signal coming in the mixer.
I hear the noise more with Pioneer HDJ2000 rather then with other headphones (i.e. Senneheiser hd 25). The noise is on low frequencies and maybe the HDJ2000 has more bass presence.

This is not a big problem since in the real world I would never use the mixer in a 100% quite room, but I'd like to know if I should worry about this.

Thank you!

Luca

@Luca > Do you get the noise if there is NOTHING else connected to the DJM? Try with only the power cable. If you still have noise, try moving the DJM to another electrical circuit as there may be other devices causing interference on that electrical connection.

Hi Pulse many thanks for the quick reply.

I've tested the DJM connected to another power cable and power plug with no any extra rca/usb/etc cables.

I'm quite sure the noise is present only in the right channel of the headphones. With HDJ or HD25 I can still hear a very very subtle noise.

Just for curiosity I've plugged in my mobile phone in-ear headphones (using mini jack) and the noise was gone!

The most important difference I see between professional and mobile headphones is that the mobile one has the jack with 3 rubber rings (for the builtin microphone).

I've even noticed that if the mobile headphones connector is not connected completely in the jack the noise is present and is quite louder than the HDJ/HD 25.

I will try to move the DJM to another electrical connection as soon as possible.

Thank you again for the advice.

Luca

Probably static on the cables itself. Have you tried spaying Deoxit on the 3.5mm jack and on the 1/4 adapter?

@Ian -> I think the problem is more related to the jack input. I've tried different headphones with different cables and the noise was always present. With some headphones the noise is not detectable.

Maybe is the jack plug on the DJM that is loose, but I will wait some time before to send to the service center because this more an obessions rather than a real problem.

The output to the speaker or the recording via usb is fine with absolutely no noise.

I've even tried to record the noise using a recorder connected to the jack output but on the resulting wav file I can't hear nothing :-)

My question is how far do you have the volume knob dialed? Is it full open? Are you only hearing noise when there is no music playing? Or can you also hear noise with music?

Hi Pulse, from 0 to full open nothing changes: I can hear the noise in all the position. The volume of the noise doesn't change moving the knob. As soon as some music is played I can't hear the noise anymore.

Without hearing it myself, it's hard to say if it's a problem or not ... but if you can't hear it once music is playing, it kind of resolves itself, no?

The headphone output is a lower quality D/A converter than the master outputs of the mixer, so there may be some noise as compared to "zero," but it shouldn't be annoying.

Thank you Pulse for the great support. I've tried to record the noise using a digital recorder. If you want it you can download from here

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/130649/djm900nxs2noise.wav

It's the last part of a track with very high volume settings. I've connected a tascam digital recorder to the headphone output. I hear the mumbling in the background but to a very very lower volume.

I will keep the mixer as it is since is not annoying and I'm not quite sure that here in Italy the service centre has already the spare parts for the nxs2! :-)
