Best way to fast connect CDJ-2000 with laptop?

Hi there,

I am a DJ and currently perform live with rekordbox prepared USB sticks.
I recently upgraded to Rekordbox 4 and am really loving the Rekordbox DJ part. I want to connect my laptop (Macbook Pro) to the CDJ's, so I can select the songs on the CDJ. Nothing crazy.

However, I'm looking for a solution that requires a minimum of (un)plugging cables, since I am regularly in a situation (performing live) where I immediately have to take over after a previous DJ. I would prefer not to work with a Rane soundcard or a network hub, since it's just too much hassle getting up and running with little or no changeover time after the previous DJ.

What would be my best option? Can this be achieved with 2 USB cables running from both CDJ's to my laptop? Do I have to change the CDJ's to HID mode? Am I better off with Serato DJ on my laptop?

 I'm a bit puzzled here...

HID Mode is running via USB Connection; can be used with Traktor or SDJ (think RB uses this as well);

Lan Connection is only required for Rekordbox Link, so that you can browse your music from your MBP and throw it on the CDJs as well as from one CDJ to another;

You cannot connect both CDJs to your computer unless you are using some kind of hub which is connected with you MBP.

If you want to get things done quickly, best would be if you have 2 or even 4 mirror usb devices, so that you can use the USB Function on the CDJs, that would be my suggestion. Could you please explain why you need the Link function in the club?

What I basically want is to connect the laptop in one way or another, so I can see the wave of the track on my screen, and I want to be able to select the tracks from the CDJ's (so I wouldn't have to touch my laptop at all). The laptop would function as a visual aid.

For HID Mode you can use USB; In HID Mode, Waveform should be shown up in program and on the CDJ as well;

For RB Link, you will need to connect Lan, so you need kind of Hub; some mixers support an internal Hub (DJM 2000 Nexus); if the CDJs are both connected with the DJM 2000 Nexus for example, you can use a single Lan Cable to connect the mixer to your MBP.

Am I right in thinking that HID mode with USB cables requires a Rane box and Serato DJ software? Connecting the Rane box in between laptop and CDJ's would make it less plug and play, and basically not a real option. It happens a lot that I have to start my set right after the previous DJ's last song, so unplugging cables while the last song is playing is definitely not an option...

In almost all of the cases, a DJM900 is available, I have never received a DJM2000Nexus.

In short, what I'm looking for, is the easiest solution to hook up my laptop to the CDJ's (so I can select the tracks on the CDJ, and see the wave on the laptop screen), with a minimum of unplugging cables.

2 USB cables (without a Rane or any other hardware) would be OK with me, a powered LAN hub would also work... I have "Rekordbox 4 DJ" and "Serato DJ" software available.

thanks!

You can plug your CDJs with an USB cable to your laptop and use Rekordbox DJ. You will see then the Wave form and you have to set the CDJ to HID mode i guess for that.

But if you just want to use your Laptop as an Library only, i would prefer the stable and safe Lan connection. I use for that a USB powered 5 Port Lan switch so i don't need any power supply. This solution  is for free in the Rekordbox Export mode.

The CDJs display shows you from where the sound source is coming, so you can easily disconnect the LAN cable in the club and plug it in to your small switch. I had never problems with that.

Does connecting through Lan allow me to browse the songs from on the CDJ's, and can I see the songs playing on my laptop screen?

If that is possible, that would be a decent solution for my needs!
