XDJ-RX Code E-8306 - then freezes

Greetings...

I recently purchased the Pioneer XDJ-RX and have some serious issues that I've been had happened to me over the weekend.  I would consider myself to be an experienced pioneer user having 2 CDJ-2000's as my main gig set up and have never had any issues using a USB of any sort.

Over the weekend I decided to use my XDJ-RX to gig.  I've been using it to gig for a few weeks now with no issues.  I initially was using a 16GB Kingston USB but I found it didn't hold enough music.  I upgraded to a 128GB Scan Disk USB and used it a few times with no issues... Until the weekend.

About 40 minutes into my Dj set, I went to load a track to the right deck and the dreaded code E-8306 NO FILE popped up.  I've read a lot about this code but my case was a slightly different scenerio.  So I figured maybe it was that one file that I couldn't find.  So I tried another... and another... and another.  same code.  Mind you for the first 45 minutes the XDJ-RX had no problem locating any of the files (VERY IMPORTANT TO KEEP IN MIND). Other situations I've read about so far the code would come up right when you tried to load the first OR a new track.

At this point I'm starting to sweat a little because the song I was playing in my left deck was running out.  I immediately went to grab my other flash drive that I have on back up and before I can place the other USB port, the XDJ-RX freezes up.  No sound, wave movement, nothing- completely froze. You can imagine the sheer embarrassment one suffers after being considered to be an "experienced Dj" having audio freeze up and having to completely power down in the middle of my set. I switched back to the Kingston USB drive while occasionally switching over to the Scan Disk flash drive to load my  new songs in.  I was able to finish my gig with no problems but I was a nervous wreck.

Fast forward to  an 1 hour ago.  I needed to run a test to figure what the problem was- as you can imagine, having anything freeze up and having to shut down in the middle of a set is every Dj's worst nightmare.  I decided to use the Scan Disk flash drive again, but used the "USB 2 Port" this time.  Sure enough, 45 minutes into my set, after having no problem locating songs I experience the same problem only slightly different. I went to load a song and all of a sudden the deck gave me a different code (which I did not write down) but basically stated it couldn't locate the file.  The XDJ-RX screen froze up again, as I was NOT able to scroll thru the menu- but the left audio was still going... after about 40 seconds I was able to toggle around the menu etc.  I went to load yet another track and the dreaded E-8306 code came on. I then tried to load previous tracks that I have already played and the code came on saying it couldn't locate the file (super weird right!?).  I tried 4 or 5 different tracks and none of them could be found.  And about a minute after that- the whole unit froze up.  No audio, all wave files were visible but frozen... Menu buttons were not working.

Now before I test this again using another USB Stick there are a few things to keep and mind and a few questions I have for you Pioneer guys...

1) I eliminated the possibility of it being a problem with the USB Ports 1 & 2 - this happened on both sides.

2) All other situations I've heard the Code-E306 about, happened right when the you tried to load the first track in.  It would tell you immedietly.  Mine is a little different (and far worse).  It happened about 45 min. into the set after loading all music files with no issues, then telling me all of a sudden that the files weren't there.

3) The freezing issue is NOT COOL. I can understand me having to use another audio source however, if the screen freezes and audio stops at some point you're going to have to power down and reset the XDJ-RX.  Again every Dj's worst nightmare.

As far as how I'm loading my tracks into the USB Sticks:

I pop both USB sticks into my MAC Desktop.  I take the file from my itunes library and drag directly over to the playlist that I have in the USB stick that appears on Rekordbox. Yes I am using an older version of Rekordbox (2.0.1), and I already know what you're going to say. "Have you tried updating to the latest Rekordbox version etc".  And my answer is NO... My rekordbox has been working fine with my CDJ-2000's, and have not had this problem until I used the Scan Disk 128 GB Flash drive.. NOW.... with that being said.

Is it safe to believe its't the USB stick that I'm using?  Sounds like a very stupid question as the process of elimination would clearly point to a USB stick issue.  If so what USB' sticks SHOULD I use?  Is it possible that I have to many GB's on the USB?  I haven't read this issue in any other forums, not to mention the issue of "freezing" would lead me to believe there's a problem with my XDJ-RX and not my USB.

I look forward to your input as to how I can resolve my issue.  And this is very time sensitive so let's get on it boys! :)

Hey Roc,

Sorry to hear you're having issues.

First things first, let's make sure we have the latest version of the firmware installed: http://www.pioneerdj.com/en/support/software/xdj-rx/#firmware-update

Second, you should most certainly upgrade to Rekordbox 4.0.6.  It's still free and we have made some serious improvements and bug fixes.

Third, all drives should be formatted in FAT16, FAT32, or HFS+.   Hopefully they already are, as reformatting will erase all content.

You should try to replicate the problem after each step to more precisely pinpoint the problem.

Hopefully these solutions will work for you.

@DJ Roc > What utility did you use to format that drive or did you just use it how it came out of the packaging?

Hey Roc, the same exact thing happened to me tonight on my aero. Thank God it was a volunteer job for the p.t.a. Bowling night and I covered it with an announcement for raffles and said  someone kicked my cord out so give me a minute to boot back up...... Meanwhile I'm sweating my ass off because it happened out of nowhere.

the way it went was exactly like your situation. I was playing for exactly 45 mins too when it happened. I loaded right deck with a song I just played the night before at a 50th birthday. After I chose the song, the screen went blank for about 3 seconds, then came up and read "not analyzed" . I clicked back and chose the song again. Again it read "not analyzed". I clicked back to menu and I froze and didn't allow me to use anything........3 seconds go back and , it happened. For the first time in 22 years of dj'n the music stopped. Nightmare. So I pressed "stop usb " and powered down. Powered back up and put stick in and all I had was a pioneer folder and it told me how much gig it had on the card and some greek looking numbers and letters. STICK WAS BLANK!!!! I always have a backup so I plugged in the backup stick and worked for the next 3 hours. There was a slight issue again but this time, the left deck. 3 songs in a row it had a problem reading songs I played last night, but as I sweat it out and chose another folderol worked. That feeling of not knowing when and why sucks.the stick that froze the aero was a PNY 128g. I thinks it's usb3 .0 but not sure. Aero has been updated to 3.0 and I used the stick 7 times before with not a hiccup. Any idea?

@Danny- Hey man, sorry to hear you went thru the same nightmare. However, my issue has SEEMED to have been resolved.  @Mark was nice enough to shoot me a call and assist me with my issue.  I did what's called a "firmware update" on the unit itself and since then I've had no issues at all.  Try doing the firmware update and hopefully that should resolve the issue.

10-4 Roc. I will try a firmware update. I plugged my 128 g usb into my computer and clicked on "properties ". It showed that something was taking up about 80 gigs. So the music is still there, however it's hidden under a bunch of corrupted files and I can't open them. My computer reformats in exFAT and the aero likes FAT32. I put it through the ringer this morning with the bad usb and there was no music. Just corrupted files. I selected one of them and the deck in mention froze up but the sampler still worked and I switched to line and used an ipad to cover it up. Same deal with the other deck. I pulled the usb after stopping it and put in a backup and it was all good. I never powered down the system. So, I think for the future I will leave a computer connected to line input for any "interruptions".

Same exact problem has been happening to me. Happened with a few prior firmware versions and happening now on the latest one, all different USB drives, occurs two to five or more times in a four hour gig. Device is unusable this way, I'm ready to sell it...please help!

Jeff, after checking my usb stick, it seems to be a corruption somewhere on it. Almost all of my 20 something thousand songs are legit. Being burned over from cd or itunes. If it's happening like you say, go to pioneer and choose the aero platform and download the latest firmware onto a seperate usb. Load it into aero and turn on holding shift and utility? Together. You tube it to be sure. It will update the aero. Then take your main usb and reformat it and reload all songs through rekordbox again. For me, hasn't happened since. But, i also never played the song that froze it again. (Rude- remix)
I also leave an external source like iphone with music connected to the deck/line. This can save you as you swap in a backup usb. The mic still works too so you can cover as best you can. Good luck
